July 16, 2023, we lost our 16-year-old son Cowen tragically in a car accident.
The outpouring of support and love for our Cowen was overwhelming and humbling during the days and weeks that followed, and it was then that we were reminded just how many lives Cowen had been a part of and how many people he had touched in his short 16 years we were blessed enough to have him.
To know Cowen was to love Cowen; he had a smile and a laugh that could light up a room, and he would do anything to help anyone no matter who you were. Cowen would go out of his way to make things easier for anyone he encountered, and he was always “fixing things.”
Cowen had planned to continue on to welding school after his high school graduation where he would train for a career in what he loved to do and excelled beyond his years at.
We established the Cowen Dean Kumler Memorial Foundation as a way to not only honor the legacy of our son, but a way to give back to the community for years to come by providing scholarships to graduating seniors that will be continuing their education in a Trade Based School. Though we do not get those celebratory moments with our son or the opportunity to see where the future would have taken him; we do get to be a part of helping others on similar paths that Cowen had been on to reach their dreams.
The Scholarship criteria set by our board of directors requires all applicants to have a GPA of 2.5 or better, have 3 letters of recommendations from school faculty or employers, be employed during high school, and be accepted into a trade school for welding or other trades. They are also required to submit an essay with their application.
The applicant that we have selected to receive the Scholarship from the Cowen Dean Kumler Memorial Foundation far exceeded those criteria. This applicant has been a member of the Tippecanoe Valley Anglers Club, a member of FFA which includes being a member of the FFA Forestry team (which brought home the state title in January) and a member of the FFA welding team where he was named State Runner up in the senior division, and 2nd High Individual out of 100 welders at the State Welding competition this year, all while maintaining a GPA of 3.49. This young man will be attending Kentucky Welding Institute with hopes of making an impact in agriculture through welding.
The letters of recommendation we received for this applicant were glowing, and the essay he submitted was written from the heart of a young man that we believe truly sees the impact he can make in his community.
We are truly honored to present the 2025 Scholarship on behalf of the Cowen Dean Kumler Memorial Foundation to Mr. Aaron Backus!
