Red Ribbon Week is coming up and we love seeing how Wawasee Middle School will be celebrating it!

Wawasee Middle School has some fun dress-up days coming up to celebrate Red Ribbon Week!

We will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 26th–October 30th.

Red Ribbon Week is the largest and longest-running annual drug, to***co, and violence prevention awareness campaign. It began in 1985 in Calexico, California, when the family of a DEA Special Agent wore red ribbons to honor his sacrifice and take a stand against illegal drug dealing, narcotics, to***co, alcohol, and violence. The goal of Red Ribbon Week is to mobilize communities, educate youth, and promote safe, healthy, drug-free lives.

The theme for this year is "Make a Difference, Be a Hero, Stay Drug Free."

During all our programs with youth and parents we stress this information.

🧠 Why are developing brains more vulnerable to the effects of drugs?

This Prevention Month, watch the REACH Lab’s video, “Drugs and the Brain: Why Waiting Until Full Brain Development Is Important.” Learn how the adolescent brain develops and how substance use can affect it.

This video covers:

✔️ What synaptic pruning is and how it shapes the brain
✔️ How substances can hijack the brain's reward system
✔️ Why the brain isn’t fully developed until around age 25
✔️ How early substance use increases the risk of addiction
✔️ What harm reduction strategies can help protect your health

Whether you are a teen, young adult, parent, educator, or health professional, this video provides science-backed insights to help you make informed decisions about substance use. Check it out using the link below!

Wawasee 7th graders thoroughly enjoyed hearing from our Grace intern, Addison, during Rise Up! this week. We love having her in the classroom, where she regularly connects with the youth and enriches our lessons by sharing her own experiences.
