Breast cancer treatment can impact more than cancer itself—it can also affect bone health.

Some therapies used to treat breast cancer may lead to bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Understanding these risks and taking steps to protect bone health can make a significant difference during and after treatment.

This informative article from Cleveland Clinic explains the connection between breast cancer and bone density, along with practical strategies for maintaining strong bones throughout your cancer journey.

If you missed this month's Navigator Connect: Live with Kristi, you missed an inspiring and informative conversation focused on enhancing the care we provide to patients every day.

Host Kristi M. Denny was joined by Beth Chandler, RPT, CLT, for a meaningful discussion about the importance of recognizing and addressing lymphedema in the oncology setting. Together, they explored how navigators can empower patients through education, early intervention, and compassionate support throughout the cancer journey.

The conversation also provided an opportunity for oncology navigators to ask questions, share experiences, and learn practical strategies that can make a real difference in patient outcomes.

Thank you to Kristi and Beth for reminding us that navigation extends far beyond coordinating care. It is about listening, educating, advocating, and helping patients maintain the highest possible quality of life.

Watch the replay and be part of the conversation that continues to strengthen our navigation community.

Advancing Breast Care Beyond Borders

The National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC) is honored to be part of a groundbreaking international initiative aimed at improving breast cancer screening, quality measurement, and patient outcomes across Asia.

NCBC Executive Kimberly Samuels recently traveled to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan at the invitation of Aurora Medical and healthcare leaders throughout the region to help launch a collaborative effort focused on advancing organized breast care delivery and quality improvement programs. During the visit, Kimberly met with hospital executives, physicians, cancer center leaders, and government officials to explore how proven quality frameworks can help strengthen breast cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment pathways.

While many countries have made significant investments in breast cancer technology and treatment, the implementation of standardized quality measures, multidisciplinary breast center programs, and comprehensive screening management systems remains an evolving opportunity in many regions. Through this collaboration, NCBC will share its expertise developed through more than two decades of advancing quality breast care and the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers (NQMBC) program.

This initiative represents more than a partnership—it is an opportunity to improve outcomes for women around the world by fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and helping healthcare organizations build sustainable systems that support earlier detection and higher-quality care.

Together, we are working toward a future where every patient, regardless of geography, has access to the highest standards of breast care.

Can breast cancer risk be reduced? Research from Oxford highlights that while no prevention strategy is guaranteed, lifestyle factors can make a meaningful difference.

Maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, limiting alcohol consumption, and making informed health choices may all help lower risk. Small, sustainable changes can have a lasting impact on long-term health.

A new study is reshaping how we think about breast cancer risk.

While smoking and genetics are often highlighted, researchers found that age itself may be one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. As we grow older, changes in the body and cells over time can significantly increase risk.

The takeaway? Awareness and regular screenings matter more than ever — especially as women age. Early detection continues to be one of the most powerful tools in improving outcomes.

This is also an important reminder that breast cancer can affect anyone, even those without a family history or obvious lifestyle risks. Prioritizing preventive healthcare isn’t optional, it’s essential.
