🍂🐾 NEW MONTH, ONE SMALL STEP TOWARD PREPAREDNESS!

Hello, November! Today’s challenge from the Kosciusko County CERT Team: make sure your pets are ready to leave with you in an emergency.

If you had to leave home quickly, could you find their leash, carrier, and supplies without searching?

🎒 Pack food, water, bowls, medications, and cleanup supplies.
🐕 Keep leashes and carriers easy to reach.
📸 Include a recent photo of you with your pet and copies of veterinary records.
🏡 Plan ahead for a place to stay that welcomes your animals.

Start small today: gather your pet’s essentials in one easy-to-grab spot. A little preparation now can make a stressful moment easier for the whole family—including the four-legged members! 🧡

🎃⏰ ONE MORE TREAT TONIGHT… AN EXTRA HOUR!

After the costumes come off and the candy is sorted, remember to FALL BACK! 🍂

Daylight saving time ends overnight. At 2:00 a.m. Sunday, November 1, clocks turn BACK one hour to 1:00 a.m.

Before heading to bed:
🕰️ Set manual clocks back one hour.
🚗 Remember the clocks in your vehicle and on household appliances.
📱 Check that your phone’s automatic date and time setting is enabled.

Enjoy Halloween, and remember that sunset will be an hour earlier by the clock tomorrow. Watch for pedestrians as evenings get darker! 🧡

🎃👻 KEEP THE SPOOKS. SKIP THE TRIPS!

Before the first little ghost or goblin arrives, take a quick walk from your sidewalk to your candy bowl. Is the path ready for visitors? 🍬

🔦 Turn on porch lights so guests can see walkways and steps.
🍂 Sweep away wet leaves and move cords, decorations, and pumpkins out of the walking path.
🦽 Consider handing out treats at driveway level so children who use wheelchairs or have trouble with steps can join the fun.
🐕 Keep pets safely away from the door during the trick-or-treat rush.

A welcoming Halloween starts with a clear path—and a little thought for every visitor. 🧡

🍂📸 BEFORE THE FUN, MAKE A PLAN!

Heading to a fall festival, trick-or-treat event, or another busy gathering? A few minutes of preparation can help your family stay safe together.

📸 Snap a photo. Take a clear picture of your children before heading out so you have a current photo showing their clothing and shoes.

📍 Pick a meeting spot. Choose a specific, easy-to-find location and make sure everyone understands the plan.

🦺 Point out helpers. Show children which event staff, security personnel, or police officers they can ask for help.

📱 Keep your phone charged and help children learn your phone number.

🚨 If your child goes missing, notify event staff or law enforcement immediately.

Preparedness belongs everywhere—even during family fun! 💚

💚 YOU’RE SOMEONE’S BACKUP PLAN… BUT WHO IS YOURS?

An unexpected hospital visit. A road closure. A family emergency that keeps you away overnight.

If you couldn’t get home, who would handle the things you normally do?

🐾 Feed your pets or let the dog out?
🏫 Pick up your child from school or daycare?
👵 Check on a loved one who depends on you?

The Kosciusko County CERT Team encourages you to have that conversation before you need the help.

📱 Ask a trusted person if they can step in.
📝 Share the instructions and contact information they would need.
🔑 Arrange safe access if necessary.
🏫 Make sure backup pickup contacts are authorized with your child’s school or daycare.

“Someone would help” becomes a stronger plan when that someone knows you’re counting on them.

Take five minutes today to ask—and offer to be their backup, too. 🤝

📍🚨 If you had to call 911 right now, could you explain where you are?

When you’re enjoying a trail, visiting a park, or traveling a rural road, take a moment to notice your surroundings.

✅ Street names and nearby intersections
✅ Park names, trail names, and marked entrances
✅ Mile markers or nearby landmarks
✅ Your direction of travel

Don’t assume your phone will provide your exact location. Tell the dispatcher what you know, answer their questions, and stay on the line until they tell you to hang up.

🍂 On your next outing, challenge your family: “How would we describe our location if we needed help?”

A little awareness today can help responders find you when it matters. 💚

👟 BEFORE YOUR FEET HIT THE FLOOR…

If an emergency wakes you in the middle of the night, would your essentials be within reach?

A little preparation beside your bed can make a difference:

✅ Keep sturdy, closed-toe shoes nearby to help protect your feet from broken glass and debris.
✅ Have a working flashlight within reach.
✅ Keep your glasses handy if you wear them.
✅ Keep the path from your bed to the door clear.

Tonight’s preparedness challenge: Take one minute before bed to check your setup—and help everyone in your household do the same!

Small steps today can help you be ready tomorrow. 💚

You put in the time, learned new skills, and worked together to complete your training. Today, you put those skills into action during our practical exercises, and we are proud of you all!

🚨 Putting their training into action!

During today’s Kosciusko County CERT Basic Training exercise, our teams practiced checking simulated victims for injuries, assessing their needs, and prioritizing care through triage.

Working together and communicating what they found helped our members practice the skills they may need when someone in our community needs help. Great work, everyone! 💚

🚨 Learning by doing! 🚨

Today was our second day of Kosciusko County CERT Basic Training, and we put what we’ve been learning into practice!

We split into two teams and worked through hands-on exercises that included:

✅ Triage
✅ Basic search and rescue
✅ Utility shutoff
✅ Small fire suppression
✅ Cribbing to help stabilize heavy objects

These exercises gave us a chance to practice working together, communicating, and helping others safely during an emergency.
