Several years ago a group of young adults found themselves being placed in a long term care nursing facility due to the increased demands put on them due to their disabilities and diagnoses. Most of these individuals resided at home or in pediatric facilities where they had ample opportunities to socialize with their peers and participate in a variety of leisure activities and events. hey know or realize moving to a long term care facility would change their lives. You see, when people move to a long term care facility, funding changes, donations drop off and you are usually placed in an environment with much older people. Luckily for them, they all came to reside at Fox Subacute Center in Warrington, a center for people who require the use of a ventilator to breath. Even luckier for them, they found themselves among a group of individuals who chose to be the masters of their destiny. They could have easily decided to let life pass them by under the control of the staff and their diseases. They didn’t and so the Over 21 Club was founded in 2008, a group to provide opportunities for young people with disabilities to meet, socialize and participate in leisure activities. The group originally planned to work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association who at the time was phasing out the camp program for participants over the age of 17. Prior to this, individuals with MD were able to attend an MDA camp until the age of 21. This group would fill the void created by this loss and so the group decided to change the name to the Over 17 Club. Unfortunately things did not go as planned and the group chose to operate independently using MDA as a resource for members instead of a direct partnership. The first major event was a beef and beer that was run by group members with a little help from their friends. It was planned to raise money for the group to operate. The event was a roaring success and raised enough money to set up a wireless connection for all members, purchase a wireless printer and host a networking social to introduce the group and their mission to others like themselves in order to expand their membership base to other people in the community or in long term care facilities.
