It’s been a busy spring and summer for your Fauquier County Professional Firefighters. We’ve responded to a range of critical incidents from structure fires and significant wrecks to technical rescues, medical emergencies, and hazmat incidents at federal buildings.
We’ve also participated in the community in other ways. We held coat drives and food drives. We’ve held fundraisers and raised awareness for cancer patients.
We’ve grown our department. We graduated a total of 43 recruits and lateral hires, with 42 of those members joining the union. Rescue 3 was placed in service, thanks in large part to the work of Brother Frederick, and that makes a total of 3 rescues in the county, one for each battalion. We’ve also had members promote to Technician II, and other members just completed a lieutenant promotional process (congrats to those on the eligibility list!).
On Saturday 9/26, we take another step forward. We are going to begin staffing two more engines full time bringing a total of 7 staffed engines throughout the county. This means faster help in more of the community.
We’re also transitioning from a 48 hour work week to a 42 hour work week. This is a huge win for our department as it prioritizes the health and recovery of our firefighters, leading to better performance on calls. We will be one of the only fire departments in this region working this schedule, which puts us ahead of the curve. The 42 hour work week is becoming the national standard and we’re proud that Fauquier has recognized that early.
While we still believe there is more work to be done, we’re incredibly proud of how much we’ve accomplished not just these past few months, but the past few years. We have to acknowledge and express gratitude for the volunteer companies and county administration that share our mission and support our vision. And of course all this was made possible by the hard work of our membership, which is the backbone of this department.
