After several weeks of deteriorating health and almost death, it was determined that the mono had activated a rare blood disease known as Hemophagocitic Lymphohistiocystosis (HLH). After several months of chemotherapy, steroids and a myriad of other drugs, the doctors had Bobby’s HLH under control. During this time, however, Bobby suffered the usual side effects of such treatment. He lost his hair
from the chemo, and the steroids caused him to swell twice his normal size. Bobby had been an average 17-year-old boy until then. He was uncomfortable with his appearance, but he grew to accept it as a part of the process. Eventually Bobby regained his health and, subsequently, his old look; but, as fate would have it, in April of 2003 Bobby relapsed. After several months of dire events caused by a suppressed immune system, Bobby ultimately had to undergo a bone marrow transplant. His chances were good -- his brother Patrick was a perfect match. On December 2, 2003, Bobby underwent his transplant and things seemed to be going well. He was right on target and expected to be home for Christmas... Tragically, on December 16, 2003, Bobby took an abrupt turn for the worse and, within hours, Bobby died. On December 16th at exactly 10:49 A.M., Bobby breathed his last breath.
______________
After Bobby’s death, his grandpa Robert Orf (Papa), and his aunt Linda Bauer (aunt N***y), wanted to find a way to keep his memory alive. Bobby loved life - He was athletic and enjoyed playing sports – especially hockey. Aside from his battle with HLH, hockey is one of the places Bobby demonstrated Strength, Courage and Determination. That paired with his Hockey number 17 was making of his logo! Among the many other hobbies Bobby had, playing golf with his Papa and aunt was one of his favorites. A memorial golf tournament seemed a perfect idea to both honor Bobby’s memories and help others in need. Not only is this a special day for his family and friends to get together and reminisce over all the fond memories, but also an opportunity to raise money for those in need - A scholarship fund for college students with health complications who also demonstrate Strength Courage and Determination. Thanks to all of our loyal golfers, hole-sponsors, and supporters, we’ve been able to keep this tradition going for 16 years! We couldn’t have done it without you. We look forward to many more years to come and having new friends and families join us!
