Master Gardeners of Johnson County Missouri

Master Gardeners of Johnson County Missouri Gardening The Master Gardeners of Johnson County Missouri are trained individuals who enjoy learning and sharing their expertise with others.

Our gardening backgrounds range from hobbyist to professional, from beginner to experienced, from young adult to senior citizen. The common bond is a love of gardening, learning and sharing. After training, Master Gardeners serve as a resource with University of Missouri Extension to give county residents research-based answers to their gardening questions. The primary purpose of a Master Gardener

is to volunteer, but members rate camaraderie and learning opportunities as important reasons for participating

Japanese beetles are beginning to emerge in Missouri.

Populations are low now but activity is expected to increase over the next two to four weeks. Early scouting helps guide timely management decisions.

What to look for:
• In soybeans, check multiple areas and estimate overall defoliation. Beetles often feed in the upper canopy, leaving a skeletonized look where only leaf veins remain.
• In corn, watch for beetles feeding on silks during pollination. Pay attention if silks are clipped very short, especially when beetle numbers are high and pollination is not complete.

Pat Weir, emeritus master gardener has lead a team of Master Gardeners working on her vision for the Vest Triangle garden for about 20 years. Her vision is that of a drought tolerant, yellow blooming multi season garden, a little oasis in the middle of the concrete. Early spring, daffodils bloom followed by coreopsis, followed by Stella Dora day lilies, which are currently in bloom and then black-eyed Susans take us into the fall. If you see us working, give us a honk as you drive-by. It’s the corner of Vest St near the intersection of Mitchell, & Broad St.
