Sophomore Miles Barry of Boy Scout Troop 513, partook in the project, to finish a lectern restoration at the request of the Warrensburg High School Russell Elsberry Chapter of the National Honor Society.

The purpose of an Eagle Scout service project is to hone and demonstrate leadership skills and fulfill the part of the Scout Oath that reads, “To help other people at all times.”

The lectern was originally crafted for Warrensburg High School principal Russell Elsberry, who served from 1958-1976. The high school National Honor Society chapter, which was renamed the Russell Elsberry Chapter after 1985, was one of many groups at the school who utilized the lectern.

After years of use, the existing lectern was in a state of disrepair and no longer functional.

Under Miles’ direction, the lectern was refurbished receiving structural repairs, a new wheel, sanding, staining and finishing. Miles also relocated the microphone holder, added a podium stand that could be stored inside the lectern and a protective cover.

Miles plans to celebrate achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in February.

Dear senior NHS members!

We have exciting news to announce! Previously each chapter was only allowed to nominate a few members for the NHS National Scholarship. However, this year, any eligible senior member of our NHS chapter may apply for the scholarship.

Information about the National NHS Scholarship can be found below and at http://www.nhs.us/students/the-nhs-scholarship.aspx.

Note: Only NHS senior members who previously submitted a scholarship application to Rusch/Beckers will be considered for our local chapter. The recipients of the local NHS Chapter Scholarship will be announced at the senior award ceremony in May 2016.

Applications for the 2015–16 National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship program will open this week.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), parent organization of the National Honor Society, has awarded NHS Scholarships since 1946, providing more than $12 million in scholarships to outstanding NHS members.

This year marks the beginning of significant growth for the NHS Scholarship Program, highlighting NASSP’s commitment to recognizing students and increasing support for college access and success.

Applications and further information will be available in the NHS Scholarship section of the website on November 16.

Student applications and all recommendations must be completed online.

The deadline for student applications is February 16, 2016. You and your principal must submit recommendations and certify applications by February 24, 2016.

This outlines what’s new with the program this year:

You may now allow any eligible senior member of your NHS chapter to apply for the scholarship; this removes previous limits on the number of applicants per chapter.
The scholarship criteria include the four pillars of NHS, as well as financial need, demonstrated by eligibility for participation in the National School Lunch Program.
The number of scholarships awarded will increase from 200 to 300 national semifinalists. All semifinalists will receive $1,500 scholarships. Twenty-five national finalists will receive an additional $1,500—for a total of $3,000. The national winner will now receive a total of $15,500.
This year’s disbursement will total $500,000, doubling the amount previously awarded. NASSP will continue to gradually increase scholarship funding until a total annual pool of $2 million is established.
NASSP is proud to administer this national scholarship program for the 17,600 chapters of NHS. We encourage your chapter to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to recognize your outstanding NHS seniors and support their journey toward future achievement and success.

Sincerely,

JoAnn Bartoletti (signature)
