For more than 100 years, Warrensburg American Legion Post 446 has been part of this community.

Now, we need the next generation of veterans and their families to help carry it forward.

The American Legion isn’t supposed to be just a place you remember once a month for a meeting. We want Post 446 to be a place where veterans find camaraderie, families feel welcome, kids grow up understanding service, and our community comes together.

We want to bring new life, new ideas, and new families into our Post.

The Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Company Inc. is commemorating the 25 anniversary of the Global War on Terrorism by honoring our local area GWOT veterans during the 9/11 ceremony this year. Please submit a picture of your GWOT veteran to the provided email or pm to us for assistance getting it there!

Let’s remember PVT Baker tomorrow at 10am!

With May being National Military Appreciation month and Memorial Day being Monday, May 26th we would like to take this time to share some of the Warrensburg/Thurman area Roll of Honor members. Members on this list are those who have passed during active military service, this is one of 2 list we read during the Memorial Day Ceremony. Currently the list is being revised to include those who died in service from pre ww1 conflicts and to gather more history on each member.

Today we remember US Army Private Silas Baker. Born in Thurman, 1834. The husband of his late wife, Robey and his wife at time of enlistment Lydia and father of 4 to Charles, Rufus, Arminda and William. Silas enlisted on September 1st, 1864. Attached to H Company, 142nd Infantry Regiment of the New York State Volunteers, Silas would of seen combat throughout the Carolinas Campaigns. On January 15th, 1865 he was killed in combat duringng the second battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. The battle of Fort Fisher was a pivotal victory for the Union as Fort Fisher was the lasts open port in the Confederate States of America. Many people consider this the Normandy invasion of the Civil War. From a few different sources we have found Private Baker was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle of Fort Fisher.
From the accounts we have found Pvt. Baker was buried on the battlefield at Ft. Fisher but has a memorial at Baker Cemetery on High Street in Thurman.

Be sure to come out to honor and remember Pvt. Baker and the other 1.2 million Service Members who have given there lives for this great nation Monday, May 26 for the Town of Warrensburg NY Memorial Day Parade, parade starts at 9am.

Let’s remember the Haskell brothers tomorrow at 10am!

Today we remember 2 brothers lost just weeks apart from each other in Europe during WW2. US Army Private First Class Eldon and Tech (5) Sergeant Ray Haskell. Born in Warrensburg to john and edna.

Ray born 12 November 1922 assigned to the 749th Tank Battalion was killed in action in france on July 16th, 1944. He was temporarily burried at carquebut/bloseville cemetery in France, in 1948 he was reburied at Warrensburg Cemetery.

Eldon was born January 7, 1925. And was assigned to the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. He was killed in action at the Battle of Anzio, Italy. The 45 ID went on to serve more days in combat during WW2 than any other unit, the Netflix series The Liberator is the story of this division during WW2. Eldon is burried in Warrensburg Cemetery.

In thier honor Haskell Brothers VFW Post 4821 was named after them.
Laying eternally next to eachother at Warrensburg Cemetery they are a reminder for us that our freedom comes with a price yet young men and women stand ready to win this country’s battles, behind them is a family that suports, loves and fully understands the stakes of war.
