Hidden in Plain Sight: Trumbull County - Answer

This week’s detail can be found in the ceiling of the rotunda at the McKinley Memorial in Niles.

Dedicated in 1917, the memorial honors President William McKinley, who was born in Niles in 1843 and later became the 25th President of the United States. Today the memorial and museum preserve artifacts connected to McKinley’s life, presidency, and early years in the Mahoning Valley.

The marble rotunda, columns, decorative ceiling panels, and open courtyard were designed to create a grand ceremonial space around the McKinley statue at the center.

The blue and gold ceiling details from this week’s clue are just one small part of the building’s incredible craftsmanship and design.

This location is one of the featured stops in the “This is Trumbull” Adventure booklet created as part of America 250.

There’s a ton of history about the memorial, library, and museum included in the online tour here: https://theclio.com/tour/2944/16

Dig into Trumbull County’s past this summer 🏺

At this immersive, hands‑on summer camp, young explorers ages 8-14 will step into the world of archaeology and uncover the stories buried beneath their feet. Campers will work side‑by‑side with real archaeologists, learning how to identify artifacts, use excavation tools, and interpret the clues left behind by the people who lived here long ago.

The camp takes place at a verified Underground Railroad site in Trumbull County, giving participants a rare opportunity to dig into one of the region’s most powerful stories of courage and freedom. Each day blends discovery, teamwork, and outdoor adventure as kids investigate the past in the very place where history happened.

Lunch and snacks are provided daily.

Summer camp runs from 9am-3pm daily. $80/child

Hidden in Plain Sight: Warren - Answer

This week’s detail can be found on a painted panel beside the entrance to The Saratoga Restaurant at 129 E. Market Street in downtown Warren.

The artwork references both the Trumbull County Courthouse and Warren’s Packard history, tucked alongside one of downtown Warren’s longtime landmarks.

Founded in 1916, the Saratoga Restaurant has operated in downtown Warren for more than a century and remains a familiar gathering place for generations of residents and visitors alike.

This vintage postcard from the TCHS digital catalog shows the Saratoga Restaurant interior. While we do not know the exact date, you can still find much of that classic downtown lunch-counter atmosphere today through the Saratoga’s longtime interior details.

Thank you for exploring downtown Warren with us through Hidden in Plain Sight over the past few weeks. In June, the series will begin expanding into other communities throughout Trumbull County.

Future clues will feature locations included in the “This is Trumbull” Adventure booklet, a local history travel guide created as part of America 250.

Booklets are available through the Tourism Bureau, and you can explore the online version here:
