Thank You to all who helped us establish our boat-decontamination program!
Both decontamination trailers are now up and running.

To show our appreciation for all who supported this first-of-its-kind lake protection program here in Connecticut, we welcome you to an Open House, this Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 24, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Preston Fire Station. Feel free to bring anything that you put in the lake to the fire station for hot water decontamination. This could include kayaks, canoes, sailboats, paddle boards, rowing shells, any car-top craft, boat motors, etc.

Or just pop in to say hello! It's been a long winter and we'd love to reconnect.

Thank you to the almost 60 individuals who donated funds to the Lake Waramaug Conservancy though Give Local this year! Because of you, our experts - led by science - can continue to safeguard what we all love: a clear, clean and swimmable Lake Waramaug. We are grateful for your generosity, and most importantly for your care of the Lake!

The sun is setting on the Give Local Campaign, but there are still two hours remaining to help us reach our goal! Please help the Conservancy in our partnership with the three lakeside towns and the Lake Waramaug Authority in developing a program to keep hydrilla out of our waters. We simply can't do it without YOU. Link in bio.

We are LIVE!! Please join us in our efforts to safeguard Lake Waramaug from the most formidable foe we've seen in decades: hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant that could render our waters unusable. Your contribution will help the Conservancy in its partnership with the three lakeside towns and the Lake Waramaug Authority in our development of a Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination (WID) Program that will prevent this insidious w**d from ever finding our waters. For more information, please see www.lakewaramaug.org. Link to Give Local in our bio!

We have been successfully handling invasive aquatic plants for decades in Lake Waramaug, by sending dive teams to inspect vulnerable areas as well as by harvesting any detected. Hyrdrilla, however, is a much more formidable foe: a non-native invasive aquatic plant that if allowed to take hold in Lake Waramaug will destroy it. Its prevention is currently the most urgent focus of the Conservancy. A "red alert" warning has been issued to Connecticut lake communities as it has already infested 70 miles of the Connecticut River and many other neighboring lakes. When hydrilla inhabits a lake, it chokes out all native aquatic plants and fish populations, making large areas unusable for any kind of recreation, and degrades water quality. It is commonly known as the "world's worst aquatic invasive plant," and we must act preemptively to keep Lake Waramaug clean and swimmable. YOU can help us safeguard our treasure, Lake Waramaug, by participating in Give Local! Please join us on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week and give what you can. Our grandchildren will thank you for it! Please see www.lakewaramaug.org for more information. Link in bio.

For this year's Give Local campaign, YOU can play a part in protecting Lake Waramaug from an insidious invader. For decades, the Lake Waramaug Conservancy has worked diligently to keep our waters clear of invasive species: by shoreline vegetation surveys to sending divers down for harvesting to the latest EDNA testing to keep a look out for indications of our latest foe, the perilous hydrilla. Therefore we are pleased to announce that we are partnering with the three lakeside towns and the Lake Waramaug Authority to develop a Watercraft Inspection and Decontamination (WID) program. Your participation during our Give Local Campaign will help us keep Lake Waramaug clear and functional for recreational activities. Keep your eyes peeled on your email inboxes and hear on social media for updates, and PLEASE JOIN US in this important work on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 21st and 22nd! Join us for a town meeting on hydrilla, Thursday, March 5th at 6 PM in person at Bryan Memorial Hall in Washington or virtually (Zoom link included below). There is a “red-alert” warning to Connecticut lake communities to be on the look-out for Hydrilla. When Hydrilla infests a lake, it chokes out all native aquatic plants and fish populations, makes large areas of a lake unusable for any kind of recreation and degrades water quality. It is commonly known as the
“world’s worst aquatic invasive plant”.

The three lake towns (Washington, Warren and Kent) are hosting a town meeting were the following will be discussed:

1) What is Hydrilla?
2) What is currently being done to protect Lake Waramaug?
3) What additional measures are needed to keep Hydrilla out of the lake?

Hydrilla has been identified in several lakes, ponds and rivers around Lake Waramaug, and it is proving to be a formidable pest.

Please attend and ask any questions you might have about this looming threat to Lake Waramaug and the ongoing work needed to keep it out of the lake.

Thank You for helping us preserve the water quality of Lake Waramaug!

Lake neighbors and residents have described this winter as practically apocalyptic. Ice dams, frozen pipes and sub zero temperatures have us longing for the Spring thaw, but this freeze is actually a good thing for Waramaug. Aside from the necessary stratification, allowing seasonal oxygen and nutrients to be distributed evenly during turnover, ice cover on lakes is important. "Biologists tend to think of the winter as a reset for lakes, according to Amy Smagula, limnologist with the DES. "The colder darker period in the winter with ice cover provides the lake with a metabolically slower time without much algae production. No plants are growing. The animals are moving a bit slower, so it's sort of a fresh start once we get into the spring..."
