Why is the scarlet carnation Ohio’s state flower?

It all goes back to President William McKinley, born on this day in 1843 in Niles, Ohio.

McKinley’s signature bloom dates to the 1876 congressional race, when he ran against Levi Lamborn of Alliance. Lamborn, a physician and amateur horticulturist, had developed a bright scarlet carnation he called “Lamborn Red.” Before each debate, he presented McKinley with one of the flowers. After winning the election, McKinley considered the red carnation a good‑luck charm. He wore one on his lapel almost daily and often gave carnations to visitors.

In 1901, during a visit to the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, McKinley was shot twice. He survived for eight days but died on September 14. Moments before the shooting, he reportedly removed the carnation from his lapel and handed it to a young girl.

After his death, Dr. Lamborn helped lead the effort to honor McKinley by making the scarlet carnation Ohio’s state flower. The Ohio General Assembly adopted it on February 3, 1904.
