A fundraiser for the Tennessee librarian who was fired for refusing to remove LGBTQ+ books from the children’s section to the adult section has reached over $128,000.

Luanne James, who worked as a library director in Rutherford County, was terminated from her role on 30 March after a vote from the library board.

The GoFundMe, organised by Dianne M, has received more than 3,000 donations at the time of writing, with the funds going “directly toward supporting her family’s basic living expenses during this time”.

“Luanne has dedicated nearly her entire adult life to public libraries, working tirelessly to expand free access to information, technology, and essential services for library patrons and local communities,” Dianne M wrote in the fundraiser’s description.

Dianne M also detailed the impressive impact James had on the library during her tenure, which includes securing around $6 million in grant funding.

“These funds made it possible to create and expand public programs, improve computer access and connectivity, renovate and repair existing facilities, construct a new library building, and the purchase of a bookmobile and wheelchair accessible Sprinter van for community outreach,” the description continued.

Frances McDormand has never hired a publicist, never taken out a For Your Consideration advertisement, and never done press junkets during awards season. She won Best Actress three times: for Fargo in 1997, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2018, and Nomadland in 2021. Each time, she campaigned by doing nothing. Her wolf howl at the 2021 podium was a tribute to sound designer Michael Wolf Snyder, who had died during post-production of Nomadland.

Her approach to the industry is as distinctive as her performances. She has publicly argued against the awards campaign system, calling it a corruption of the work itself. McDormand and her husband Joel Coen live outside the Hollywood social circuit. She is one of only four actors to win three or more Best Actress Oscars, alongside Katharine Hepburn (four), Meryl Streep (three total, two for Best Actress), and Ingrid Bergman (three total, two for Best Actress).
