Segal Family Foundation Championing African Visionaries
(1)

06/01/2026

Some of the most powerful movements begin with one simple decision: choosing to believe in people early. 💚

Twenty years ago, Barry Segal was already doing that, long before locally led change became a global conversation.

Long before the momentum, the packed rooms, and the growing networks, there was simply a belief that the people closest to the challenges already carried the vision needed to transform their communities.

That kind of change grows through trust, shared purpose, bold ideas, and people continuing to show up for one another year after year until something bigger takes shape. ✨

For twenty years, that first beat has grown into a pulse. A growing community of visionaries, builders, partners, and changemakers across the continent, all helping shape what African-led change can become.

And this July in Nairobi, we gather to celebrate that journey and, together, boldly step into what comes next.

Segal 2026: The Next Beat.

Over the years, what moments made you realize something bigger was being built here? Comment below. 👇

What if the next beat for African-led innovation looks a little less like memorization… and a little more like a Disneyland for future inventors? 💚

This 's spotlight is on him as the co-founder and Director of ProjeKt Inspire. In this video, he answers the question: What does trust-based funding actually feel like?

He's a Tanzanian-born academician and medical scientist with over 6 years of experience in malaria drug efficacy clinical trials, molecular analysis of markers of malaria drug resistance, and malaria diagnostic tools.

He is also the same innovator who led the launch of two of the biggest science centers in Tanzania, and the first of their kind, in Dar es Salaam and Tanga; the same person who was named the Next Einstein Forum Ambassador to Tanzania (2017/2019) and recipient of the Point of Light Award from Queen Elizabeth in 2020.

His dream of building the Disneyland (or rather, Disneylands) for Science in Africa is quite simple, really. Provide a proof of concept for the incorporation of project-based integrated learning into Tanzania’s current education system as a way to better equip, inspire, and prepare young people for innovation, problem-solving, and future life-changing careers.

So here you go: living proof that the next era of African innovation is already being imagined, tested, and built by Africans themselves.

Visionaries like Dr. Lwidiko are not waiting for the future to arrive. They’re building spaces where the next generation can experiment with it.

And this July at , Nairobi becomes the city where those kinds of ideas collide and move forward. 🥁 Stay tuned.

When powerful storytelling meets powerful local leadership. 🌍
________

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Daughters of the Lake, a film about Nyanam Widows Rising that continues to resonate far beyond the screen.

First, it was recognized as an Honoree at The Webby Awards: a distinction reserved for the top 25% of all entries submitted globally. Out of more than 13,000 submissions, it stood out for its storytelling, humanity, and impact.

And then, the film was also longlisted by the One World Media Awards in the Women’s Solutions Reporting category. This recognition celebrates journalism spotlighting courageous, human-centered stories from across the world.

So, yes, this one deserves to be celebrated loudly. 📢

A massive congratulations to the brilliant team behind Daughters of the Lake: Color Four's Varun Chopra & Matty Neikrug, our very own Sarah Gioe, and every other SFF rockstar who helped bring this powerful piece to life. ✨

Maybe this is the real power of storytelling, because stories like this do more than document reality...they help the world see local visionaries differently and beautifully. 💚

Some people are not waiting for the future to arrive. They’re already building it. 🌍✨

This 's spotlight is on Allen Kendunga. She is the founder and CEO of Talent Match, Inc., a Rwandan social enterprise that helps close the gap between education and opportunity through technology-enabled career development and workforce-readiness programs.

Since 2019, Talent Match has partnered with institutions like the University of Rwanda to equip students and recent graduates with employability and entrepreneurship skills, helping facilitate an 87% employment rate among trainees while supporting the growth of student-led ventures across the country.

Today, their digital platform serves more than 5,000 active users with career resources, mentorship, and job-matching opportunities designed to help young people move from potential into possibility.

And honestly, visionaries like Allen are the reason why the next beat of African-led innovation is underway.

This July at , we’ll get to celebrate them and spearhead what comes next for the continent, from within the continent itself (i.e. Nairobi 😊). Stay tuned. ✨

The future of African-led innovation already has a pulse. And this year, it gets louder. 🌟

You can almost feel it when an ecosystem is preparing to step into something bigger than itself.

The conversations begin stretching further than they used to, ideas start finding each other faster, unexpected yet beautiful collaborations begin taking shape, and the future stops feeling like a distant possibility and starts feeling real & close enough to touch. That's the Next Beat.

This July, Nairobi will become a meeting point for the visionaries, builders, and changemakers shaping the next chapter of African-led innovation from within.

Segal 2026: July 21 - 23, 2026.

Save the date. ☑️

Don’t just watch the future; be part of *The Next Beat*. ✨

We’re building something powerful here, and era92 is now a part of it. 💚

era92 is a youth-led social enterprise that tackles poverty in Uganda’s slums by equipping young people with tech skills, connecting them to jobs, and providing capital to help them grow their businesses.

We love them because they see underserved youth not as charity cases, but as ambitious young people worthy of opportunity and investment, backed by a sustainable, business-oriented approach to tackling unemployment and poverty.

The greenest flag a funder can have? Trust. 💚

Not endless hoops, 114 reporting templates, and certainly not making nonprofits “prove themselves” every three weeks.

Trust.

During Skoll World Forum/Marmalade/Sidebar week, nonprofits and peers voted for the funders they believe truly walk the walk when it comes to participatory and trust-based philanthropy.

Out of 68 nominated funders, Segal Family Foundation was ranked third in Unicorn Philanthropy's list of “Unicorn Funders,” alongside Mackenzie Scott/Yield Giving and Imago Dei Fund. 🦄

This recognition means a lot because it came from the community itself. To everyone who voted, nominated teams, shared stories, pushed philanthropy to think differently, and continues showing up for a more trust-filled future: thank you, truly. 🥹

This matters more than you know because beneath all the conversations happening across the sector right now, something deeper is shifting.

More people are asking what philanthropy looks like when trust is real, when partnership is genuine, when communities are encouraged to lead, and when funders are willing to share power instead of simply holding it.

And honestly? That shift feels louder, warmer, and more visible every day as we head toward . Watch this space. 🌟

Some of Africa’s boldest local solutions are still being built with the least amount of funding. 🌍

Across West and Francophone Africa, visionary leaders are tackling urgent challenges and creating transformative change, yet the region remains one of the most overlooked in global philanthropy.

Tomorrow, the Segal Family Foundation and the Gates Foundation are joining Myriad USA for an important conversation on what it really takes to fund this region well: from navigating language and culture, to building trust-based partnerships, to understanding where catalytic funding can make the greatest difference.

This conversation matters because proximity matters.

Local leaders closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. The question is: how can more funders move with the trust, context, and long-term commitment needed to support them effectively?

If you care about locally-led development, equitable philanthropy, and where philanthropy needs to go next, we hope you’ll join us.
