Boy Scout Troop 101

Boy Scout Troop 101 Troop 101 camps every month. In July we attend a fun filled week of Summer Camp. In August we take a special trip, usually a week.

Sometimes it is camping in Canada, some years it is a week-long bike trip, other years we may canoe or backpack.

Monday this week, Scouts in Troop 101 had a very special guest speaker.

Mike Salcone, who served in World War 2 stopped by to talk with our young men.

Drafted at 19 and serving in the Navy for about 3 years, Mike jokes he’s about 200 years old (actual 102), and hopes to live to 300.

He served on the USS St. Louis.

Thank you Mike, and thank you for your service.

Scouting America Troop 101 in Warren, Ohio, marked its 50th anniversary this summer with a reunion drawing more than 140 Scouts, alumni, and leaders to celebrate five decades of outdoor adventure, service, and fellowship.

Founded in 1975 after local boys persuaded World War II veteran William E. Brown to start a troop, Troop 101 began under the sponsorship of the local Elks Lodge. Leadership later passed to Gary Mansell, then to longtime Scoutmaster Jim Potjunas, who guided the troop for 37 years and helped it grow into one of the region’s largest.

After the Elks Lodge closed, the troop moved to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where a new facility was built in Potjunas’ honor in 2017. Leadership today continues under Scoutmaster Jason Paisley, supported by the Troop 101 Alumni Association.

Over the past 25 years, Troop 101 has logged over 27,000 camping nights, 12,000 hiking miles, and 11,000 service hours, awarding more than 4,000 merit badges and producing 180 Eagle Scouts.

The anniversary celebration featured campfire stories, games, and Dutch oven cooking — a reminder of the troop’s strong community spirit and the generations of youth it has shaped through the program.

Troop 101 currently has 42 active members and continues to meet year-round on Monday evenings, carrying its proud legacy into the next 50 years.
