Warren, Ohio lost one of its purest musical spirits with the passing of guitarist and recording artist Gary Del Vecchio, who left us unexpectedly Friday night at 71.
Gary never needed to read music—he felt it. That instinct, that fire, made him a true local Wunderkind. At just sixteen, he stepped into Youngstown’s Peppermint Studios and recorded some of the tracks that became the album titled, Buzzin’, a psychedelic burst of raw talent that would be rediscovered, remastered, and celebrated again in 2023.
Gary lived a musician’s life, an artists life… with both feet on the gas, leading with his heart. He fronted and played in bands up and down the East and West Coasts—groups like Wizard, Max, Bullit, and Scareb—lighting up clubs and sharing stages with legends including Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane, Bo Diddley, and many more. He didn’t chase the spotlight; he simply belonged in it.
In the 1980s, Gary built his own creative sanctuary: Inner Chamber Sound Labs in Girard, shepherding and championing other local artists . Later, he became a driving force behind Downbeat Musical Arts Center, helping shape its early identity and serving as the heartbeat for countless artists who rehearsed and continue to grow within its walls. If you played there, you felt Gary’s presence—steady, encouraging, and always leading musicians to dig deeper.
His recently reissued album Buzzin’ carries a line from the titled track that now feels like a fitting farewell:
“One things for sure, Gary’s flying free and high.”
Gary Del Vecchio lived wide open. He lived louder and freer than most. He lived with the kind of passion that leaves a mark on everyone lucky enough to come into his orbit. And while his journey here has ended, the music he made—and the lives he touched—will keep humming, buzzing, and echoing into eternity. Today’s for you Gary. God bless and God speed, Starman.
We’re going to miss you terribly.
