Summer break can be full of fun, adventure, and memory-making, but it can also bring challenges when routines disappear, and children suddenly have a lot more free time at home.
One strategy we discuss in SafeCare's Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) module is the importance of setting clear expectations before activities begin. Whether you're heading to the pool, playing outside, tackling a craft project, or simply spending the day at home, children thrive when they know what's expected of them.
π Set expectations before the activity starts.
π Redirect negative behavior toward the behavior you'd like to see.
π Follow through consistently.
Simple, clear directions and consistent follow-through help children feel safe, successful, and confident.
Most importantly, don't forget to enjoy the little moments. Summer doesn't have to be packed with expensive activities to be meaningful. Reading together, riding bikes, building forts, making sidewalk chalk masterpieces, or sharing popsicles in the backyard can create memories that last a lifetime.
