Terrapin Station and Freshwater Turtles

Terrapin Station and Freshwater Turtles Turtles, turtles, everywhere!

Basically, we're a bunch of graduate students (Jules Winters, Abby Dominy, and Lori Lester) studying a population of diamondback terrapins in Barnegat Bay, NJ. Terrapins are considered a "species of special concern" in the state of NJ which pretty much means that they're not considered endangered yet but they could be in the near future. With the help of our fearless leader, Dr. Hal Avery, and many Earthwatch volunteers, we participate in an ongoing mark-recapture study.

Happy Turtle Day, Everyone!

"The purpose of World Turtle Day, May 23, sponsored yearly since 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive."
