Monarch Project of Cape Cod

Monarch Project of Cape Cod Helping to save the Monarch butterfly through education and distribution of milkweed. We also distributed milkweed plugs later in this season.

The migration of the Monarch butterfly, and indeed the survival of this iconic species, is in jeopardy. The Monarch butterfly depends on the existence of the milkweed plant, which is the Monarch caterpillar's only food source. For a variety of reasons, the milkweed plant is vanishing across America, including Falmouth where Monarchs have long been summer visitors. This is an immediate threat to th

e Monarchs’ survival, and in turn, a threat to our own environment because the Monarchs are key pollinators. To help mitigate this problem, we formed The Monarch Project in 2014 to educate the community about the Monarchs’ plight, and to provide and distribute milkweed seeds to restore the Monarch’s habitat. With the support of a Woods Hole Foundation Grant, we distributed 250,000 milkweed seeds at the Waquoit Farmers Market and other places in Falmouth and the Cape. (We package the seeds ourselves and include germination and growing instructions.)
