Our Education Intern Liam led a Honeybee and Pollinator program at last week's Youth Climate Summit held at Garrison Union Free Schools - teaching the important role these critters play in supporting our local food systems, sustaining food webs, and preserving biodiversity.

Liam and the students talked through ways in which climate change and human development are putting our bee populations at risk. Students offered up solutions like promoting the need to conserve floral resources for bees by preserving native wildflower fields and the need to reduce our reliance on industry, vehicles, and technology that emit immense amounts of greenhouse gas into our atmosphere.

Liam and the students finished off the lesson by playing our Pollinator Game, Bee Edition! Students developed an understanding of the various obstacles and challenges pollinators face in light of climate change, disease, pesticides, invasive species, and habitat loss due to human development. Bees sure live a fruitful but difficult life! 🐝

Hosted by The Garrison Union Free School District, the Youth Climate Summit is a community event created to foster stronger connections between students and their environment. Opening doorways to a future of sustainable careers, the event features long-term research projects from PK-12 students and hands-on workshops led by experts in the field.

It’s lockdown time in our incubator! 🐣

We started with 22 eggs and are down to 15 viable eggs as we head into the final days before hatching. If all goes well, we should start seeing pips in the next two days!

Inside the incubator are Crevecoeur eggs, one of our heritage chicken breeds that we are actively working to help preserve and grow. Originating in France and introduced to the United States in 1852, Crevecoeurs are known for their striking feathers and unique crest. Despite being a hardy and productive dual-purpose breed (meat & eggs), they eventually fell out of favor and are now listed as critically endangered on The Livestock Conservancy Watch List.

Pictured is a Crevecoeur chick that was raised by Mrs. Ansar's classroom at Glenham Elementary and given back to Stony Kill Farm to be part of our flock. The adult Crevecoeur pictured is Megan the Rooster, a blue variety who is cared for by our 4H Flourishing Farmer Ora.

We’re excited to be part of the effort to restore these beautiful birds to their original glory.

Surprise visitors in the pasture today! One of our hives decided that a fence post was the perfect place to stop and regroup before finding a new home. 🐝

With a little patience and some expert beekeeping skills from Mary Ellen, our beekeeper, we were able to safely catch the swarm and relocate them back into our hive box. Swarming is a natural process where a colony splits and heads off with the queen to find a new nesting spot. It’s always amazing to witness and it’s even cooler when you catch them.

As we say here at the farm - “There’s never a dull moment”😉

We loved welcoming the students from Poughkeepsie Day School to the farm for a day of hands-on learning and outdoor exploration! 🌿🐑

Students spent time meeting our lambs, learning about animal care, and discovering how sheep grow and thrive on the farm. We also explored the pond together and found the resident bull frog that's been eluding the SKF staff.

There’s nothing better than seeing curiosity come alive outside the classroom. ❤🐸
