A delegation of dignitaries of the Filipino American Community of the Yakima Valley were honored to be guests at the regular meeting of the Yakama Nation Tribal Council on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Rey Pascua, FACYV President, was joined by Board Officers Lorena Silva and Don Divina, and by Carrie H. Pascua, a member of the Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs of Washington State on a warm afternoon.

Council Chair Jo De L. Goudy , Secretary Athena Sanchey Yallup, and the other Tribal Council members were gracious hosts, and spoke eloquently of the relationship of the Nation and the Filipino Community. Pascua and Silva brought special gifts, as Pascua presented Chairman Goudy, a Muhammad Ali fan, with a framed poster celebrating American heavyweight boxing champions, and Silva presented Yallup with an embroidered Philippine Kimona. They also brought a historical photo of the Filipino Community with Yakama Chief Jobe Charley, circa 1940. Charley was instrumental in winning farming rights for Filipinos on the reservation.

Pascua requested the meeting in order to celebrate the friendship of the two peoples, and to update the Tribe on the documentary that speaks of the history of Filipinos in the Yakima Valley that is being released in the near future. The documentary tells the story of ten Filipino American Communities and is a project three years in the making.

Into June on the vapors of great events in May. FACYV was well represented as Governor Jay Inslee signed the October Filipino American History Month law (SB 5865) on May 7. Descendants of Pascua, Bucsit, DeFiesta, Almoite, Baldoz, Bolong, and Silva families .were at the Governor's conference room for the moment.

Brandon Bruner of Selah High School was awarded the FACYV scholarship for 2019. The student athlete, is literally that . . . earning the $1,000 scholarship after leading his high school Viking team to the State 2A Baseball championship. The Mabuhay Foundation shared our graduate celebration eve, and awarded three scholarships.

Thursday Take Out takes it's summer recess beginning on July 4 and lasting until August 23rd. Activities will not take a recess though, as we will be doing our annual clean-up, and working on the projects funded by the capital budget grants awarded by the 66th Legislative session of Washington State. The three specific projects are the new roof on Filipino Hall, demolition and removal of the house adjacent to the Hall, and construction of an outside performance stage.

We welcome all to join our great organization. Dues are only $15 a year, and you will join a dynamic and historic program . . . best wishes.

Rey Pascua, President

Greetings to all from central Washington State! Our FACYV Board and Officers met on April 29th, and prepared for our General Community meeting this coming Sunday, May 5. It has been a remarkable three weeks personally. The big news comes out of Olympia, the capitol of the State of Washington.

We have changed the name of our annual Harvest Dinner celebration to THE FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH DINNER, or FAHM Dinner. This is because the State of Washington is one the verge of making October FAHM a state law! Governor Inslee will be signing the legislation, Senate Bill 5865, on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. This is the 10th year of the state recognizing FAHM, as two governors and nine legislatures have announced annual proclamations. It has been a true labor of love to work with state government, and along the way over twenty-five city, county, and school districts have also recognized FAHM, several permanently.

On top of FAHM, legislature granted our Community over $60K in renovation funds. We will be able to replace the roof of HISTORIC Filipino American Hall, and enhance our adjacent property with a new performance stage. Thanks to the Bainbridge Island Filipino Community for inspiring the concept!

Members should anticipate a possible "Consulate On Wheels" visit from the San Francisco Philippine Consular Staff. I made the request, and the Consulate is setting priorities for future visits. They will assist again with official papers and oaths for Philippine nationals . . . at Filipino Hall in Wapato.

I promised new Vice-President Sonny Gailan it would be an exciting year. Watch out for FACYV!

The 67th Anniversary Celebration of Filipino Hall was "one for the ages" on Saturday, March 30, 2019. Over 500 persons came to Filipino Hall to enjoy the food, greet friends, and to witness history. The format of a buffet-type food service, especially Filipino Food AND spurred by a wonderful Yakima Herald article by Phil Ferolito two days earlier meant LINES. The shorter hours this year meant that more people came to get their fix of Filipino delicacies, and so a 150 foot line of folks sometimes was necessary.

The doors opened at 12:00 p.m., and Loretta Ygona was able to deliver a nice prayer to begin the festivities. President Rey Pascua then announced that visitors could begin getting their meals, and so they did. The elected Officers and Board of FACYV made a line of impressive servers for the salads, rice, pancit, chicken apritada, pork lichon, sauteed bok choy, and Filipino desserts.

The program started at 2:30 p.m., and featured speeches and cultural performances, m.c'ed by Event Chair Lorena Bucsit Silva and Dr. Pio DeCano II.

Bremerton, Washington Councilmember Leslie Daugs, a proud Filipina, was the Keynote Speaker, and gave guests a idea of what a Bremerton was!

The national anthems of the Philippines and the United States were sung, while Rev. William Shaw delivered an Invocation.

Rey Pascua spoke on this, his last term as President of FACYV. And of course the Oath of Office was performed, administered by Daugs.

Children, namely the Batang Wapato Dance Troupe, highlited the 67th program with their authentic Filipino cultural dances. Mrs. Perlito Quinto was the leader.

This years anniversary will set a standard for years to come!

Join us for FACYV's 67th Filipino Hall Anniversary!

The Filipino Hall located in Wapato, Washington was inaugurated on March 22, 1952, and there have been yearly celebrations of the historic building since. This year’s 67th Anniversary takes place on Saturday, March 30th, with food and festivities.

Lorena Bucsit Silva, General Chair of the event, promises traditional Filipino cuisine, with the service starting at 12:00 noon. The event has always featured Lichon, rice, and desserts. For this year, chicken apritada and salads will accentuate the fare.

Filipino pioneers built the hall as a place for family gatherings, and especially to secure a place for the children of the community. They will showcase their talents as members of Batang Wapato, FACYV’s youth dance ensemble.

The Anniversary celebration will feature a program which starts at 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Silva notes that the program will feature anthems, cultural performances, and the installation of the organization’s officers for 2019-20.

Keynote speaker will be Leslie Daugs of Bremerton, Washington. She is the lone City Council member of Filipino heritage in the State of Washington. Re-elected FACYV President Rey Pascua will also speak.

Chairperson Silva notes that the Yakima Valley event will be one of several major celebrations happening in the Filipino American communities around Washington State during 2019. Events are planned in Seattle, Tacoma, as well as in Olympia.

FACYV is active in making FAHM, Filipino American History Month, a state law. The state legislature has two bills before it, House Bill 1787 & Senate Bill 5865, which would make October FAHM in Washington. President Rey Pascua is a primary mover in the effort. Members and fans are asked to contact state repreentatives and urge them to pass the two bills. On Feb. 24, both bills are in the Rules Committee of the House and the Senate.
GETTING IT ON YOUR RADAR: A note so that you will also put the 67th Anniversary of Filipino Hall on your event calendar. The anniversary happens from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019. Dinner tickets are available from community officers or can be purchased at Filipino Hall at Thursday Take Out, Come and enjoy Filipino food, and celebrate the Community at the Program whish starts at 2:00 p..m. Features cultural performances and the Oath of Office to the new officers.

Greetings to all from Rey Pascua and the Board and Officers of FACYV. It was an exciting October and November 2018, and we all celebrated Filipino American History Month, Filipino and American Veterans who fought in the Far East during World War II, and set a schedule for our Holiday ceremonies.

Rey and Board members Sonny Gailan and Jim Tabayoyon honored our Yakima Valley in early November by delivering over 15 dozen donuts to those businesses. Attached to this post are Judy and Tomas Aganda of SELAH CLEANERS, with their sugar and dough goodies.

Over 200 persons attended the October 28th Harvest Dinner, In addition to the scrumptious meal, our guests were treated to dances by our Batang Wapato, and the program and display brought by the Pierce County based Jose Calugas Chapter of the U.S. Army Philippine Scouts!

Rey Pascua was a member of the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project Region 8 delegation invited to the November 15th Seattle Seahawks game. Five living veterans were hosted by the football team on the annual VETERANS RECOGNITION event.

Finally, join your fellow FACYV Community members at our annual Simbang Gabi Mass and holiday celebration on Saturday, December 15. Mass at Wapato's St. Peter Claver Church will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m., and then we will retire to Filipino Hall to enjoy food and the company of the membership . . . the FACYV Leadership might bring one business item to the attention of the attendees.
