This May my family and my favorite neighbors, The Mulchinski's, are coming together to participate in the Walk for Multiple Sclerosis at Jones beach.
For those who don't know Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative autoimmune disease, this basically means that the body attacks its own nerve cells which disrupts the nerves ability to communicate with one another. This causes a vast array of symptoms - most of which cause people battling this disease to live with invisible disabilities.
It has been estimated that 2.3 million people live globally with MS, it is 2 to 3 times more common in woman than it is in men. MS is not curable but thankfully there are many treatments out there that help to slow the progression of damage and even more that help to treat the symptoms so many battle on a day to day basis. There are still no clear cuts answers as to what causes MS which is why fundraising/awareness events like these are so important.
What people don't know is that although MS is more common in adults, about 9,000 children in the United States have been diagnosed with Pediatric MS. I am lucky enough to work at a Children's hospital who does great work and research for this cause at The Lourie Center for Pediatric MS. I am even luckier to say that I've had the pleasure of working with some of these kids battling MS and love watching them overcome every hurdle put in their path.
Team Hampton will be walking in support of my father, Dan, and my close friend, Nicole, who fight this fight with grace and dignity. You'll rarely hear them complain, in fact you're more likely to hear them crack a joke and make light of their situations.
If you'd like to come out and walk with us please click this link and join TEAM HAMPTON, if you're unable to make it and would like to consider donating to the cause our team's donation site can also be found through this link as well. Any sort of support for two of my favorite people and the thousands of others who are directly or indirectly affected by this disease would be greatly appreciated =)
PS - t-shirts coming soon. My girl Jennifer Cooney will be coming up with some artsy designs
Walk MS connects people living with MS and those who care about them.
