Looking ahead to Sunday now. SPC has a Level 2 of 5 risk up across Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma along a stalled-out front.

The likely play: a cluster of morning storms rolls east, then the air heats back up behind it and new storms build along the front from northeast Oklahoma toward St. Louis. Big hail and damaging wind are the main concerns.

One thing forecasters are watching closely is eastern Missouri into Illinois. If a low pressure spins up there in the afternoon, it could crank up the tornado threat in a small area. That's a maybe, not a lock. Two days out, just something to keep an eye on.

WEDNESDAY'S SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK:

It still looks like a potentially major severe weather day is in store, especially across and . Impressively deep surface low, with winter level kinematics (jet stream energy) and summer thermodynamics (temperature/dewpoints) will overlap across this region leading to explosive thunderstorm development.

This setup will be capable of strong tornadoes, destructive winds and very large hail. SPC has gone with a level 3 for now, but I would think an upgrade to level 4 is quite likely once some details become clear. The biggest uncertainty comes down to storm mode and whether or not we see longer lived supercells - which would up the tornado chances - or a faster transition to bow echoes and a squall line - a derecho scenario. Regardless of which we end up with, it will be intense!

SIGNIFICANT OUTBREAK possible Wednesday across the same areas - northern Missouri into central Illinois!

This is an incredibly strong polar jet stream for this time of year, and a crazy trough ejection is forecast to unleash on the Corn Belt Wednesday.

We are watching this setup like a Dominator hawk. Stay tuned

Wednesday, June 17, continues to trend toward a potentially significant severe weather and tornado outbreak across Illinois and Missouri. Global models have been consistent enough for the SPC to introduce a rare Day 4 Enhanced Risk, while two of the most reliable machine-learning models continue to increase their probabilities.

Both the Euro and GFS continue to signal an intense trough (especially for mid-June standards) that would support a significant severe weather and tornado outbreak if current trends hold.

We're still four days out, so expect the risk area to be adjusted, but guidance is becoming increasingly locked in on a higher-end scenario unfolding across the same region that was impacted by significant severe weather last week.
