UPDATE: May 28, 2026

Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 8:00 AM, walkers will gather at the bridge east of Pender, Nebraska to begin a meaningful journey to Walthill, Nebraska along the Hollis D. Stabler U.S. Army Ranger Highway.

This walk is more than miles on a road — it is a walk of remembrance, honor, strength, and unity. The Hollis D. Stabler U.S. Army Ranger Highway, formerly known as Nebraska Highway N-94, was officially designated to honor the late Hollis D. Stabler, an Omaha tribal member and highly decorated U.S. Army Ranger who courageously served in North Africa, Sicily, and France during World War II.

As the walkers travel this historic route connecting Pender and Walthill, we encourage community members to come out, show support, wave, walk alongside, or simply help uplift those participating in this powerful journey.

The walk will stop in Walthill for the evening and resume Friday, May 29, 2026 at the intersection of Highway 77 and M Avenue, ending in Macy, Nebraska at Little Warrior Park on the powwow grounds.

Every step taken honors sacrifice, resilience, and the legacy of a true Omaha warrior. Let’s stand together as a community and continue carrying these stories forward for future generations.

This month, Dr. Susana Geliga shared the inspiring story of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte to a packed room at Omaha’s newly opened Central Library. Dr. Geliga recounted Dr. Susan’s incredible life and work as the first Indigenous woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, from her early life to the opening of the hospital that now stands as the Picotte Center.

Dr. Susana Geliga is an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota and is of Borinken Taino descent. She is a professor in the Department of History and Native American Studies at the University of Nebraska Omaha, a co-director of the Genoa Indian School Digital Reconciliation Project and is currently working on a book telling the story of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte.
