Exciting news! Marne Ryan is joining us at Metalwerx this summer for her master class “Basic to Bodacious: Textured Fused Rings!” From July 22 to July 26, Marne will demonstrate her signature process, developed over 40 years, of how to transform sterling silver into exquisitely captivating textured metal. Students will also get the chance to learn her “productive pyromaniacs,” fusing sterling silver into uniquely patterned one-of-a-kind sheets by layering strips of precious metal next to, and on top of, one another.

Marne Ryan, a recipient of the 1997 Rolex award for excellence in metals, has been exploring and teaching the process of making textures through fire since 1976. She was an Artist in Residence for Pennsylvania and Delaware and a recipient of the Delaware Artist Grant. Her jewelry and vessels have won awards and recognition in the United States, Japan, Europe and Australia. Her work is in the permanent collection of The American Museum of Art and Design in New York City. Marne’s work has been included in Ornament Magazine, Lapidary Journal, Contemporary American Jewelry Design and Fold Forming, as well as many solo, group, gallery, and museum exhibitions and shows. She also produced “Organic Metals,” a six-part video series teaching fusing, jewelry projects and techniques.

We are so excited to present Metals on the Mountain 2026 this year in partnership with FSG, and even more excited to welcome Bonnie Bishoff for an unforgettable workshop, “Endless Pattern and Color and Metal Sandwiches: Integrating Polymer Clay with Metals!”

Join Bonnie at Metals on the Mountain and dive into the essentials of working with polymer clay to create highly patterned and colorful surface designs that can be integrated with wire and sheet metal in jewelry. With a low temperature for curing and a capacity to be baked multiple times, the sky is the limit for incorporating polymer clay into fine metal jewelry designs!

We are trying to get a grip over the fact that Rachel Morris is offering her master class, “Getting a Grip: Four Funky Friction-Based Clasps in Five Days,” with us this summer from July 15 to July 19!

During this master class, you will spend five days with Rachel delving into four clasps that each have friction as a critical aspect of their functionality, but which are so distinctly different in behavior that you’ll develop and improve on skills that are highly transferable to not only other clasps, but also to your everyday metalsmithing practice.

Rachel Morris is an artist and educator with more than 20 years of experience in bench jewelry, fabrication, and design. She enjoys constantly evolving her approach to her own work, as well as bringing the joy of metalworking to others through her teaching. Rachel holds a Master of Arts in Teaching and has studied metal arts under John Cogswell, James Binnion and Chris Ploof, Jayne Redman, Joanne Conant, Kate Wolf, Victoria Lansford, Cynthia Eid and others. Rachel has been a Halstead Design Challenge finalist, an Art of the Northeast finalist, and displays in galleries and teaches metalsmithing on both the east and west coasts. She has shown at nationally renowned craft shows such as Kimball Arts Festival, Art in the High Desert and Paradise City Arts, and is a past president of the Creative Metal Arts Guild of greater Portland, in Oregon!

Have you ever had a toggle clap that just won’t stay secure? Don’t worry, we have a solution for that! Introducing Rachel Morris’ virtual course, “The No-Boggle Toggle: A Hollow Form Clasp with Nested Toggle!”

During this two-session virtual class, on Saturday, May 30 and Saturday, June 6, Rachel will teach you how to nest toggles inside a hollow form, increasing security, depth, and an architectural element that the more traditional wire toggles don’t have.

Interested in learning how to add more security to your toggle clasps? Visit https://metalwerx.org/class-detail/no-boggle-toggle-hollow-form-clasp-nested-toggle to sign up!

Update from AL’s Jewelry 2 bench!

Rings, rings, and more rings! AL, along with the rest of Genevieve Montante’s Jewelry 2 class, are working along on their projects. AL is working on a sample of a ring she has been designing. The ring will eventually have four stones set on it. This week she used a different fabrication strategy to see if she could get a more cohesive final look. She is also working on a silver version of the ring!

Stay tuned for more updates and tag us in your own class progress photos, we would love to see it!
