🇮🇹 June 19, 1946 — Italy Adopts the Modern Tricolor

On this day in 1946, Italy officially adopted the tricolor in the form we know today: three vertical bands of green, white, and red, without the Savoy coat of arms.

Coming just weeks after Italians voted to become a republic, the updated flag symbolized a new beginning for the nation—one rooted in unity, democracy, and renewal after the Second World War.

The tricolor, long associated with the ideals of the Risorgimento and the struggle for Italian unification, became the emblem of a modern Italy looking toward the future.

For Italian Americans and Italians around the world, it remains a powerful symbol of heritage, identity, and pride.

🇮🇹 Today we honor the flag that continues to unite Italians everywhere.

🇮🇹✨ Sergio Marchionne: An Italian Visionary Who Transformed an Industry

On this day, June 17, we honor Sergio Marchionne — the Italian executive whose leadership reshaped the global automotive world.
Born in Chieti, Abruzzo, Marchionne took over a struggling Fiat in 2004 and led one of the most remarkable turnarounds in modern industrial history. His bold decision to rescue Chrysler during the U.S. auto crisis forged a powerful bridge between Italy and America, ultimately creating Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

Through discipline, innovation, and a belief in Italian excellence, Marchionne revived iconic brands like Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati — proving that Italian industry could compete on the world stage. His legacy continues to influence both Turin and Detroit, two cities forever linked by his vision.

A reminder of the global impact of Italian talent.

On June 16, 1700, Rome welcomed the birth of Pietro Bracci — the sculptor whose hands shaped some of the most iconic masterpieces of the Italian Baroque.

Best known for crafting Oceanus, the commanding central figure of the Trevi Fountain, Bracci brought movement, drama, and unmistakable Roman grandeur to marble.
His work helped define the final flourish of the Baroque era, blending technical mastery with theatrical emotion.

Beyond the Trevi Fountain, Bracci contributed to:
- The monumental tomb of Pope Benedict XIV in St. Peter’s Basilica
- The dynamic sculptures adorning Sant’Agnese in Agone in Piazza Navona
- Key collaborations with architects like Niccolò Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli

From the heart of Rome, Bracci’s artistry continues to shape the world’s imagination of Italian beauty and craftsmanship.

A timeless reminder that Italian genius is carved not only in stone, but in history itself. 🇮🇹🗿✨

On June 15, 1918, the Second Battle of the Piave River began — a turning point in World War I and a defining moment of Italian resilience.

After the devastation of Caporetto, many believed Italy could not recover. Yet along the Piave, Italian soldiers, supported by Allied units, stood firm against a massive Austro‑Hungarian offensive.
Despite overwhelming pressure, the Italian line held. The river itself — “il Piave mormorò” — became a symbol of national unity and sacrifice.

The failed offensive marked the beginning of the end for the Austro‑Hungarian Empire and set the stage for Italy’s final victory later that year at Vittorio Veneto.

Today we honor the courage, endurance, and patriotism of those who defended Italy’s freedom along the Piave.

Today we remember the departure of King Umberto II, the last King of Italy. After the June 2nd referendum, claiming victory, the government declared the king deposed an Italy a republic, an illegal act since the Supreme Court has not yet reviewed or declared the results.

Clashes between monarchists and republicans increased until the Strage di Via Medina in Naples on June 12th, where 9 monarchist sympathizers were killed when the police fired on protestors.

The Allied powers were getting concerned with the upheaval and the King, while rejecting and condemning the revolutionary act committed by the government, decided to depart. Many had urged the King to resist and form a rival government, knowing that the Army was ultimately loyal to him. But Umberto instead said "My House united Italy, I will not divide her." And so he left for Portugal, releasing his officers from their oath and hoping to one day return, although the republican government never allowed it.

Umberto, a good king and good man, sacrificed his throne and his family for the love of his country. If only politicians could have that love for country today.

Did you know Italy has a cheese bank? 🧀🇮🇹
In Emilia‑Romagna, wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano are so valuable — and so stable over time — that local banks accept them as loan collateral.

Producers store their wheels in climate‑controlled vaults while they age for 12–36 months. The bank inspects, protects, and insures them… just like gold.

It’s a perfect example of how Italian craftsmanship isn’t just culture — it’s economic power, built on tradition, skill, and trust.

Aging cheese as financial security? Only in Italy.

A new chapter of Italian excellence is heading into deep space.
Luca Parmitano, born in Paternò in the province of Catania, has been selected as the pilot of NASA’s Artemis III mission — the next major step in America’s return to the Moon.

While Artemis III will focus on lunar‑orbit operations rather than a surface landing, Parmitano’s role places a son of Sicily at the heart of one of the most advanced space missions of our time.

From the shadow of Mount Etna to the threshold of the lunar frontier, his journey reflects the brilliance, discipline, and global impact of Italian heritage.
OSDIA proudly celebrates this historic achievement and the generations of Italian Americans inspired by stories like his.

Avanti, Luca — Sicily and all of Italy are with you. 🇮🇹🚀🌑
