Eli J. & Phyllis N. Segal Citizen Leadership Program

Eli J. & Phyllis N. Segal Citizen Leadership Program The Eli J. Fellows are supported by the over 400 people who, as program Founders and supporters, participate as network members.

Segal Citizen Leadership Program was created to inspire and support new generations of leaders to commit to a lifetime of service and citizen leadership. Segal Fellows are selected each year to become part of the Segal Network by AmeriCorps Alums, Brandeis University, CityYear, the Center for Youth and Communities, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. Annual retreats and other g

atherings are designed to develop leadership skills, foster a sense of community, and build relationships between fellows. The goal is to build a community committed to helping each other succeed as citizen leaders, and make the experience of being a Segal Fellow a recognized and valued credential – signifying important leadership qualities, significant developmental experiences, and the support of a network of talented people. Service Fellowship opportunities are available for Brandeis undergraduate students and Heller School Master in Public Policy students. Students intern at private, nonprofit, and public organizations that are committed to purpose-driven missions. Previous internship sites include the office of the late Senator Edward Kennedy, Rep. Edward Markey’s Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the National Partnership for Women and Families, Teach for America, Health Care For All, City Year, and Share Our Strength. Segal Memorial Lecture was launched in 2007, when former President William Jefferson Clinton delivered the inaugural lecture to over 5,000 people. Periodic lectures will serve as a platform for new and innovative ideas about citizen leadership and national service.

"To think four years later I will be receiving my first offer as a classroom teacher, to officially say I will be graduating undergrad, first in my family to do so, and I will become Mr. Zaire Simmonds, Founding 8th-Grade Algebra Teacher.

I received the call on Tuesday, and right after I accepted the offer I broke into tears — out of happiness, out of relief — but also because the little boy who was in my mom's room playing teacher, writing on her walls and talking to an empty room, and the high school student in me who remembered a teacher correcting a student for calling me “Mr.” is living out his dream. "

Congrats to 2025 Brandeis Undergraduate Fellow, Zaire Simmonds!

Meet our 2026 Brandeis/Heller fellows!
Efosa Ologbosere is a student leader, visual storyteller, and emerging advocate for equity and justice. A junior at Brandeis University and a recipient of the Posse Foundation Scholarship, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and American Studies with a minor in Legal Studies on the pathway to law school. Efosa has been a Community Advisor (CA) for 2 years and an active member of campus organizations like FOCA, COMPACT, and ENACT. She self-conducted and spearheaded the "Love, Black Men" exhibit, now a permanent installation in the Brandeis Library, and led the Legally Black panel event in collaboration with ENACT, which offered networking opportunities for Brandeis students and campus partners. Efosa was also involved in the Rich Collins Fellowship and Samuel's Scholars Program, where she continued her work as an advocate for inclusion and, but in a volunteer role. Beyond her academic work, Efosa uses photography and digital storytelling to amplify conversations around representation and equity, especially for communities of color. Her leadership is rooted in active listening, collective care, and connecting with diverse communities on and off campus. Efosa is committed to expanding her work in criminal law, family law, and civil rights advocacy, aiming to contribute to systems that better serve and uplift disadvantaged communities. She believes in the power of empowering others and creating sustainable, intentional change that fosters equity and justice.

If you're in or around Providence, RI, catch 2013 Brandeis Segal Fellow Jenn Recinos's work featured at Here & Elsewhere at Storefront for Works + Process on 1392 Westminster before March 15th!

“Here & Elsewhere brings together seven artists who live and work in Providence’s West End. With roots both deep and new to the neighborhood, these artists explore themes of presence in relation to time, place, and space. Through prints, paintings, photographs, and installation, Jazzmen Lee-Johnson, Julia Liu, Heather McPherson, Ari Montford, Norlan Olivo, Jenn Recinos, and Dan Talbot conjure a multifaceted picture of a neighborhood in flux.”
