JF&CS staff celebrated Sukkot this week with a potluck lunch in our sukkah, complete with soup for a fall day! The Jewish harvest festival includes the tradition of welcoming guests, a reminder of our JF&CS value of welcoming the stranger, or in this case, getting to know our colleagues a little better.

As we enter the new year, JF&CS continues to strengthen the volunteer leadership that helps shape our future.

Lew Pearlson has begun his term as Board President after serving as President-Elect. A longtime volunteer and leader, Lew has chaired numerous committees, including CHAI Services, Finance, and Nominating.

We’ve also welcomed four new board members whose professional expertise and volunteer experience will help guide the agency's work in the years ahead:

David Bernstein brings experience as a venture investor and has already been active as a volunteer and committee member with the Center for Basic Needs Assistance.

Abby Fierman, a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, contributes valuable expertise related to the well-being of mothers and young children through her involvement with the Center for Early Relationship Support.

Hal Garnick offers extensive experience as an entrepreneur and nonprofit leader, with service spanning both healthcare and community organizations.

Dan Miller, a longtime supporter of JF&CS and member of the Finance Committee, brings more than four decades of investment management experience and a deep commitment to the organization's mission.

Board members play critical roles as strategic partners, ambassadors, advocates, volunteers, and philanthropists. Together, they help ensure that JF&CS remains strong, responsive, and well positioned to meet the evolving needs of individuals and families throughout Greater Boston.

September is Recovery Month. At JF&CS, we're proud to support parents and families throughout their recovery journeys.

Through Project NESST, we provide direct support for pregnant people and parents in recovery. Our clinicians and Family Recovery Support Specialists work with parents, caregivers, and infants to address the impact of substance use and trauma on parents’ mental health, the early parent-child relationship, and infant development.

Our team also provides training and technical assistance for FIRST Steps Together, the statewide home visiting program that supports families on their parenting and recovery journeys.

Every year, JF&CS distributes over 1,000 caring cards and birthday cards to older adults in the Greater Boston Jewish community, including many Holocaust survivors. We are grateful to our many volunteers—including this group from Temple Beth Avodah—who craft these cards with care, writing messages of comfort for the oldest members of our communities.

Sibshops is a monthly gathering for children with siblings who have disabilities, chronic illnesses, and mental health challenges. Together at Sibshops, participants share a meal, do fun activities, engage in SibChat discussions, and occasionally take field trips across the Greater Boston area. Sibshops gives kids an opportunity to gather with others who share similar experiences in a supportive and non-judgemental environment.
