GIRLS WILL PLAY SIMILARLY SEEDED ARLINGTON IN STATE TOURNEY

The 33rd-seeded Waltham High School girls varsity basketball team (10–10) will face 32nd-seeded Arlington (7–13) in the MIAA Girls Basketball 2025 Division 1 Tournament.

The preliminary round game will take place at Arlington High School on Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m.

The winner will face the tournament’s #1 seed Wachusett Regional (19–1).

For Hawks head coach Marc Lovett, just getting into the tourney was huge after a slow start.

“We started out 0–3 and then went 3–6, but the team had a belief and a confidence in what we could accomplish together,” he said.

Coach Lovett said the team relies heavily on defense.

“That is our identity, and it requires true team effort and contributions and communication from all players on the court and energy from the players on the bench,” he said.

Offensively, he's looking to starters who led during the regular season, such as junior captain Avery Leeman ( #12), who scored more than 20 points in multiple games, as well as other double-digit producers Quinn Gavin ( #2) and Sarah Valere ( #20), also juniors.

“Our team has become a family,” said coach Lovett. “They truly enjoy spending time together and everyone has a role to play that has contributed to the success of the team. We are excited about the opportunity ahead and hope to keep this going and finish strong!”
