A New Online Resource About Maine Lobster Hatcheries 🦞

For more than a century, lobster hatcheries have been part of the story of lobster science, conservation, and fisheries in Maine and beyond.

A new website, www.lobsterhatchery.info, brings this history and the science behind it together in one place. The Maine Lobster Community Alliance and the University of Maine Lobster Institute worked together to create the site as a resource for exploring the history of lobster hatcheries, the questions that have shaped hatchery research, and what we’ve learned about lobster early life history along the way.

The site traces the evolution of Maine’s hatcheries, from early efforts to increase lobster abundance to today’s research on lobster reproduction, larval development, and early life stages. It also explores common questions about the role of hatcheries and what they can accomplish, while highlighting current research taking place in Maine and beyond.

The website is intended to be a growing resource for anyone interested in the history and science of lobster hatcheries.
