You can be a good mountain biker and still have a LOT to learn. 👀

Before becoming a coach, Tina Meinhardt already considered herself a skilled rider.

Then she went through certification and started breaking down the individual pieces behind the skills she’d been riding for years.

Suddenly, there was a whole new layer to mountain biking she hadn’t realized was there.

That’s one of the unexpected parts of becoming a coach.

Learning how to understand and teach skills can also expose gaps in your own riding, sharpen your technique, and ultimately make you a more confident rider.

Thinking about becoming a mountain bike coach?
This episode is for you.

Great coaching takes energy. A LOT of it. 😅

You’re teaching, demonstrating, observing, encouraging, troubleshooting, keeping the group engaged, and paying attention to every rider moving through a skill.

And yes, sometimes you’re apparently quoting Gilderoy Lockhart along the way. 😂

That energy is part of what makes a great clinic feel fun and engaging, but constantly giving it can also take a toll.

In Episode 13 of Skills in Session, Travis Brown and Tina Meinhardt dig into coaching burnout, how to recognize it, and what coaches can do to protect the energy and enthusiasm they bring to their riders.

🎙️ Watch How MTB Coaches Can Prevent Burnout on YouTube or listen to Skills in Session wherever you get your podcasts.

Level 1 builds the foundation…
Level 2 builds on it. 👏

The BICP Level 2 Instructor Certification introduces 13 intermediate mountain bike skills, from advanced braking and steep descending to drops, pumping, bunny hops, and basic jumping.

But just like Level 1, being able to perform the skills is only part of the equation.

Level 2 challenges instructors to understand the mechanics behind increasingly technical movements, recognize more complex errors, build effective progressions, assess rider readiness, and choose terrain that supports safe, intentional development.

Because as the skills become more dynamic, the ability to teach them safely and effectively becomes even more important.

Swipe through to see the intermediate skills included in the BICP Level 2 curriculum. 👉

Being a great rider doesn’t automatically make you a great instructor. 👀

Coaching requires a completely different set of skills.

You need to know what to look for, how to break a skill into progressions, how to demonstrate it effectively, and how to recognize what’s happening when something isn’t quite clicking for your rider.

That’s what we dig into during the Bike Instructor Certification Program Level 1 Fundamental Skills Instructor Certification.

Over three days, you’ll build your coaching foundation while learning how to effectively teach all 16 Level 1 Fundamental Skills.

If becoming a certified MTB instructor has been on your radar, come learn with us at Rowdy Ryder Academy | MTB Coaching + Strength this September! 👊🚲
