For The Great Elephant Migration in Downtown Livermore, the Indian American Artists Association (IAAA) is presenting “Draped in Heritage”, an initiative that brings Indian artistic traditions, contemporary creativity, community participation, and environmental stewardship together. Professional IAAA member artists will create original, site-specific textile artworks for selected elephant sculptures, drawing from South Asian traditions.🐘🐘🐘

The initiative also extends into the community, inviting Bay Area artists to collaboratively create elephant drapes using reclaimed and up-cycled materials under the guidance of IAAA artists. By transforming discarded materials into public art, the program connects creative expression with the conservation and coexistence values at the heart of The Great Elephant Migration.

The artwork textiles will be on display with the elephants during the opening day on Saturday, October 10th. Join us on 10/10 at 10am for our community ceremony and blessing of the herd at Stockmen’s Park. 🐘

A herd of 30 elephants is on its way to Livermore, CA - arriving October 10th for a 2-month visit!

Get ready to welcome the traveling herd from The Great Elephant Migration, coming to share a message of coexistence to new audiences and new landscapes. Downtown Livermore will be the herd’s only West Coast stop in 2026, and its FIRST TIME ever in the BAY AREA.

Not live elephants, but beautiful life-size elephant sculptures handcrafted by Indigenous artisans in India from the invasive shrub Lantana camara overtaking India’s forests. Each sculpture is a replica of a real wild elephant known by name and personality to its creators in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India.

The Great Elephant Migration is coming to Livermore, CA

⚜The herd’s only stop on the West Coast in 2026
⚜Free to the public, in the heart of Downtown Livermore

Have you heard about the herd?
The Great Elephant Migration is a public art exhibition of life-size Indian elephants, a global fundraising adventure to amplify Indigenous knowledge and inspire the human race to share space. Each elephant is modeled on a real animal in southern India’s Nilgiri Hills. Around 200 Indigenous artisans of the Coexistence Collective built them by hand from lantana camara, an invasive w**d that crowds elephants out of the forests they depend on.

Harvesting the w**d used to make the sculptures contributes to restoring the habitat. Special exhibits and sales of the sculptures help fund the mission. Across the tour, proceeds support more than 20 conservation groups working on human and wildlife coexistence. Thirty of these elephants will travel to Downtown Livermore this Fall, continuing their journey to share their story with the world.
