Friends of Contra Costa Animal Shelter's mission is to improve the lives of shelter animals in Contra Costa County.

💔Help Save Puppy Steven by November 4th!💔

Only 12 months old, this little snow angel should have his whole life ahead of him. Instead, Steven is scared in the shelter and must be rescued by November 4th or he will face euthanasia.

Steven is a sweet little white dog who feels overwhelmed in the shelter. But today, he is starting to warm up and now sitting on a warm lap. A little kindness makes all the difference.

Steven has so much life ahead of him, let's find a rescue and foster home so he can live that life.

💔Young Basset Hound mix -Rocky at Just 15 months old Needs His Life Saved by October 28th!💔 $250 in donation pledges!

Just a little over a year old, sweet Rocky faces euthanasia if not rescued by October 28th.

With his dreamy eyes, shiny black coat, white-speckled chest, and short legs, Rocky is rocking this unique look. The shelter lists him as a Basset Hound-Retriever mix.

Rocky is quiet and shy, but he's beginning to come around. He allows gentle touch, leashing, and petting, though he's more comfortable when you avoid petting the top of his head. He also seems to like other dogs!

What he needs now to save his life is a calm, patient foster home who could give Rocky the security he needs to come out of his shell and let his personality shine. He barely begun his life and deserves that chance.

❤️Happy Update! Rico left the shelter this Saturday morning. Thank you to Golden Gate Labrador for rescuing this handsome boy, and to his foster for opening their home and making his freedom possible.

URGENT: Rico Still Needing a Rescue and Foster To Save His Life by October 27th!

Rico is an AKC registered Labrador who urgently needs a rescue and foster home. We have one rescue willing to take him but without a foster home they can't. Without a place to go, he faces euthanasia on October 27th.

Rico is a beautiful, young, smart, active 18-month-old 65-lb male yellow Labrador. He needs someone who can provide guidance, and give him an outlet for his young energy.

The shelter staff member working with Rico sees so much potential in him.

Background. Rico's former owner suddenly had to leave the country on short notice (NFI) and was unable to find anyone to take him... so he brought him to Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez.

What Rico's former owner says. Rico is a healthy AKC-registered Lab with a big heart. He loves being with people and he doesn't like being left alone for long periods. When he's outside by himself, he tries to jump the fence or find a way out. When people are around, he is sweet and playful. The right home for him should have someone home for a good part of the day or a plan like doggy daycare or dog walker. He is crate-trained... so he can spend time in his crate when no one is home. He needs a patient human who will keep working on his training and socialization, both at home and in public. An active family or person who has time for a high-energy young Lab is ideal.

His worst fault is that he barks when he's excited...This could be due to being so anxious while in the shelter. He does well in playgroups with other dogs -- boys or girls... You can see him play with the shepherd who kept nipping him and all he did was redirect the play to running more or jumping in the pool or something else. He does "sit". Was too excited to do a "down", but I wouldn't be surprised if he knows that also. Takes treats nicely... Most difficult thing about him is getting him back into his kennel... He really, really hates it here at the shelter. Very strong to walk; needs a guy that can hang on to him... and a few basic Dog 101 classes. The best thing about him was he didn't seem to have any inclination to jump on people, which is very rare for a large young Lab. A very very nice dog.

It would be great for him to go to a home with an existing dog... so they could run and romp, Not idea how he is with cats. Probably too energetic for a home with small children.

Medical. Rico appears to be in great health. Current on vaccinations and microchipped and neutered.

❤️A Big Smile, A Loving Heart - Petey Needs Out of The Shelter ASAP! ❤️

Sweet Petey at 9 years old should be enjoying the comforts of a home and the love of his own person. Instead, this affectionate boy spends most of his time locked up in a kennel.
Petey is know for his big smile, social personality and a love for snacks!

Petey loves people and plays nicely with female dogs at the shelter playgroups. He gets along with many dogs but not every dog is his match, but that is okay! Petey would be happy in a lower-key home where he can enjoy relaxed walks, tasty treats, and plenty of time with people.

❤️Etta Is on Her Way To a New Life!❤️

Many of you saw my post about sweet Etta, who needed surgery and was facing euthanasia if she wasn't rescued. Our community pulled together with donation pledges, shares, and so much love. Today Etta left the shelter and flew to Oregon in first class to a wonderful rescue called Love A Pit Rescue.

❤️Sandy Loves Everybody! Now She Needs Somebody to Take Her HOME!❤️

Our sweet Sandy at just two years old is one of the stars of the shelter dog playgroups. She loves playing with all the other dogs and makes friends with everyone she meets.

We are seeing this lovely girl starting to struggle with life in her kennel. She needs a home where she can feel loved, and enjoy being a young dog.

Sandy is a wonderful size dog at 34 pounds with a soft fawn-colored coat, beautiful expressive eyes, and the cutest big ears. Add her sweet smile, and she's hard to resist❣️

Sandy currently isn't on the euthanasia list but we want to help her find a home before her situation becomes that urgent. Let's give her that chance now!

❤️A loving home and the care she needed-Arcadia's new beginning! ❤️

Last month sweet Arcadia was still at Contra Costa Animal Services dog, where she had been waiting a long time for a loving home. There were concerns about her eye, but the cause could not be identified. We took her to an eye specialist for evaluation and tests and learned she needed surgery.
That surgery couldn't be arranged while she was at the shelter, so we hoped an adopter would come forward to adopt her.

And then she hit the jackpot! A wonderful couple opened their hearts and home to Arcadia, knowing she still had medical needs ahead of her.

Today, she had her much needed eye surgery. Here she is afterward with her proud adoptive dad Alex.

Friends of Contra Costa Animal Shelters (FOCCAS) helped make her surgery possible. This is what we do-help shelter animals get the care they need, sometimes continuing that support after adoption.

UPDATE: Adopted!!

💔This Precious Girl Named Roxie Could Lose Her Life on October 14th Without an Adopter or Rescue! 💔
$500 In Donations Pledges to pay for her special dog food.

Beautiful Roxie at just 3 years old, was surrendered because her owner could no longer afford her prescription dog food. At only 3 years old, this sweet girl now urgently needs an adopter or rescue to save her life.

Roxie has the most amazing eyes, one blue and one brown. As amazing as her eyes are, she's every bit as special. We volunteers are heartbroken and struggling to understand WHY she's on the euthanasia list for October 14th. Some shelter dogs have months to find a home, while Roxie has been given only weeks.

Roxie is friendly, mellow, easy to walk, and loves to play with the other shelter dogs. Spending time with her is such a pleasure.

💔Etta Faces Euthanasia This Tuesday, October 13th Without Rescue! 💔

👍$1400 in Pledges!

Sweet Etta is just 3 years old and has spent months at Contra Costa Animal Services. She loved playing with the other dogs in the shelter dog playgroups. The volunteers and shelter medical team noticed she was limping and we at Friends of Contra Costa Animal Shelters (FOCCAS) took Etta to an outside orthopedic specialist for an exam. It is recommended that she have surgery for a cruciate ligament injury and a slipping kneecap in her right knee.

The shelter is unable to perform the surgery and now Etta faces euthanasia if she is not rescued by this Tuesday, October 13th.

Our first priority is finding a rescue group to pull her and a foster home to care for her. Then we can work together on a plan for her surgery.

The surgery estimate is approximately $7300-$8650 at Pacific Vet Emergency Hospital. There is also a possibility of her having surgery at UC Davis under their fracture program with little cost. First, her records have to be sent to UC Davis to be consider for the program.

Etta is such a nice dog with so much life ahead of her. She deserves the chance to heal, feel comfortable, and be loved. A rescue stepping forward won't have to figure everything out alone, we can help at FOCCAS.

If Etta isn't accepted into the UC Davis fracture program, we can pool our resources and fundraiser for surgery elsewhere. But first, Etta urgently needs a rescue and foster home to get her safely out of the shelter so we can work together on a plan.

We are accepting pledges and that may help secure a rescue for her. Please share her post so we can find the foster home and rescue to save her life.
