Friends,

my name is Anja Heister, and I'm the new executive director for Voices For Pets. Two of my best qualities are compassion and generosity, just not when it comes to animal cruelty! This being said, instead of a long introduction of myself, I'd like to thank you for your support, and I’d like you to consider helping us with several current animal cruelty cases in the San Francisco, CA area.

Whether you are able to volunteer for a few hours a day or a week .... your time, energy, and skills contributed makes a huge difference in our work to get the criminal courts to take violence against animals seriously.

Please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 406 544 5727.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Best, Anja

While Voices for Pets tends to focus on criminal prosecution of those responsible for animal abuse, a related (and unfortunately highly unregulated) business is often responsible for ongoing cruelty through overcrowding and neglected living conditions: PUPPY MILLS.

A shout-out to those at The Puppy Mill Project and similar groups who are working to educate the public and help to enact legislation to eliminate puppy mills, backyard breeders, and those that are in it for money with little concern for the animals they raise.

With so many wonderful pets in shelters that need homes, I am not a fan of these puppy breeding businesses, and discourage those looking for a pet from frequenting them.

Please take a moment to read more about their organisation, and where appropriate, take action to support thoughtful and intelligent legislation in your own state to end this practice.

EAST CONTRA COSTA RESIDENTS - As today and the next few days will see temperatures moving into the low 100's, PLEASE make sure you take extra care for your pets! We say this every year, but many have selective memory, so...

1. If possible, keep animals inside or with access to cool, shaded areas. Tile floors and concrete slabs can help cool off pets, but only if they're not in direct sun. Do NOT lock pets in garages as they too can overheat!
2. Provide plentiful access to fresh, cool, drinking water and if your pets are outdoors, a kiddie pool or similar to allow them to cool off
3. DO NOT leave your pet unattended in a vehicle - even with windows part-way down, the temperatures can be DEADLY!
4. Walk your pets either in early morning or at dusk to avoid overheating them. Concrete and asphalt temperatures will BURN their feet, so either provide slip-ons to cover their pads, or wait until temperatures have cooled.

Remember, your pets cannot sweat - they cool through panting, and when the air is super warm it obviously is difficult for them to get cool.

If you see signs that your pet is overheated (unresponsiveness, heavy panting/breathing, weakness/collapse/inability to get up, bright red or blue gums, heavy drooling, glazed-over eyes), immediately move them to a cool location and seek the advice of a local veterinary doctor.

BE SAFE! Your pet(s) are depending on you...

MHS is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for hanging a dog in an abandoned house in Detroit.

The MHS Cruelty Investigation Department received a call yesterday from a concerned citizen who saw a heavy-set African American male walk into an abandoned house with a dog. A short while later the individual left the house without the dog. The caller walked through the house about an hour later where she discovered the dog and called the MHS Cruelty Investigation Department.

MHS investigators arrived at the location and found a young adult pit bull had been hung. The deceased dog’s body was still warm; indicating that it had died recently. The investigators searched the rest of the house and found another young adult pit bull (pictured) alive and standing in sewer water in the basement. The second dog was brought to the MHS Detroit Center for Animal Care where it is receiving care and needed medical attention.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact us at 313.872.3401.
