The Walnut Creek Library Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Joanna Grossman as its new Executive Director.

A respected nonprofit leader with more than 25 years of experience, Joanna will help guide the Foundation’s vision, strategic direction, and day-to-day operations, including programming, donor relations, and community engagement. Since joining WCLF as Interim Executive Director in January, she has already made a meaningful impact, including leading the Foundation’s 15th annual fundraising gala.

With deep roots in the Walnut Creek community and a strong background in fundraising, communications, and volunteer engagement, Joanna is exceptionally well positioned to lead the Foundation into its next chapter.

Please join us in welcoming Joanna Grossman to this important leadership role.

Shhh!!!...a Portrait in 12 Volumes of Gray 🤫

The library’s eye-catching art piece, “Shhh…a portrait in 12 volumes of gray,” turns thousands of sketchbooks into one giant optical illusion. Built from 3,960 sketchbooks stacked on a massive bookshelf in the lobby, the colorful spines act like tiny pixels that create the image of a woman making the classic “shhh” gesture. From across the room, the picture looks smooth and almost photographic, but as you get closer, it breaks apart into abstract blocks of color and texture. 🖼️

What makes the installation so fun is the way it plays with perspective and surprises visitors depending on where they stand. The familiar “shhh” gesture gives a humorous nod to the traditional quiet library, while also reminding people that libraries today are lively community spaces filled with conversation, technology, events, and creativity (all for FREE, I might add). The artwork is both playful and interactive, inviting people to stop, look twice, and experience the space in a new way.

WCLF’s own Board President Samantha Francois will join “Ah, Wilderness” Production Director Titian Lish for this engaging celebration of storytelling on June 9 at the Oak View Room at the Walnut Creek Library.

This special evening celebrates the timeless work of Eugene O’Neill — one of America’s greatest dramatists.
Experience a preview from the Eugene O’Neill Foundation’s Fall Festival production of “Ah, Wilderness!” — presented as a radio play, capturing the spirit of an era when storytelling lived in sound and imagination.
Thank you to the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House.

The Walnut Creek Library Foundation (WCLF) is deeply saddened to share the passing of Board of Directors member Ward Pynn, whose decades of service helped shape the Foundation and strengthen our community’s libraries.

A service celebrating Ward’s life will be held Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill Community Center (McHale Room).

Ward played a foundational role in the creation of WCLF. In 1998, he prepared the articles of incorporation, bylaws, federal and California exemption applications and charitable registration.

Just months later, he was named one of the Foundation’s 10 original Board members and served as its first Vice President. He served on the WCLF Board for 28 years.

As a Board member, Ward handled WCLF taxes and some of the Foundation’s financial management needs, including an endowment policy in 2004. He also organized an annual workshop series called Finance 101. Ward also played key roles in capital upgrades to the Ygnacio Valley Library and in the development and construction of the Walnut Creek Library.

Ward’s enthusiasm, wit, and energy will be greatly missed.
