"What do we owe each other in crisis?"

This week at the Advancing the Field of Alternative Response Convening in Chicago, Taun Hall joined Tansy McNulty from 1M4 and Melissa McKee for a fireside chat to answer that exact question.

For the Miles Hall Foundation, this work is personal. It is born from the devastating reality of system failure, but fueled by the determination to build a future where no one loses their life during a mental health crisis.

We are moving past the word "alternative." Unarmed care, peer support, and clinical crisis response are becoming permanent pillars of public safety infrastructure. It’s time to give this field the professional identity, standards, and permanent backing it deserves so that communities can finally feel safe.

Thanks to the Policing Project at NYU Law, Center for Innovations in Community Safety at Georgetown Law, and Alternative Mobile Services Association for hosting this vital space. 🖤💚

We lost Miles Hall seven years ago yesterday. That is seven years without his smile, his presence, his voice.

Miles was killed by the police on June 2, 2019 during a mental health emergency. He should still be here. He was not a criminal. Miles was a son, brother, athlete, musician, and beloved community member. He needed help.

His death sparked a movement for care over criminalization in California and across the country. With our community’s support, we got AB 988/ The Miles Hall Lifeline Act, signed into law to prevent future tragedies.

We are building community awareness, trust, and connection to non-police crisis response.

His legacy lives on! We love you and miss you, Miles.

We’re still smiling from our Miles in May fundraiser a few weeks ago. We raised more than $60,000 to expand non-police crisis response, advocate for systemic change, and stand with impacted families.

The love for Miles and the desire for change filled the room with hope and joy. Our community knows how to show up! It was a powerful evening rooted in legacy, connection, and purpose.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed and thank you to this year's sponsors for supporting another year of our mission to decriminalize mental illness.

The psychiatric system was not built with Black communities in mind. And too many of our people have walked into those spaces and come out more hurt than when they went in. Misdiagnosed.

Overmedicated. Unheard. Dismissed. That is not care. That is harm.

On May 19th we are changing that conversation.

What Black Communities Should Know About Psychiatric Care is bringing together five powerful voices to give our communities what we actually need. Yolo Akili, Kelechi Ubozoh, Antonia Hylton, Imadé Borha, and Dr. Rupi Legha are getting into the real conversation about how to navigate a system that was never designed for us. What our rights are. What to watch out for. And how to show up for ourselves and our loved ones with knowledge, autonomy, and power.

BEAM is meeting this political moment head-on this , and I’m honored to be part of it.

Black Healing Remixed: Regulate to Resist isn’t just another conference—it’s a response to the times we’re living in. A full month of real tools, real community, and honest conversation about what it takes to stay grounded, care for ourselves, and resist in a world that demands so much from us.

I will be speaking on What Black Communities Should Know About Psychiatric Care. As the Founder & Executive Director of Depressed While Black, I've experienced a lot in psychiatric hospitals. I've been tackled by nurses, threatened with drug injection, and forced into solitary confinement. And I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I welcome you to hear my story. I want you in the room with me.
