It is with heavy hearts that Eagle Toastmasters mourns the loss of a dear friend and longtime member, Joseph Oddie.

Joseph joined our club in 2013 and was a dedicated member of the Toastmasters community, also belonging to Park City Toastmasters of Stratford and Cheshire Toastmasters. He was a lifelong learner and an accomplished speaker, taking courses with Toastmasters World Champions and serving as a member of the National Speakers Association. After retiring from a career in sales in 2018, he spent his free time on the golf course when he wasn’t at a meeting.

We will deeply miss his passion for public speaking and his warm presence. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

Member's Spotlight: Meet Ann McGuire, Vice President Education.

I joined TM back in 2019 after I landed a new role as Director of Marketing and wanted to really work on my presentation skills. Speaking in front of a professional audience has always been a bit difficult for me - a little bit of imposter syndrome at work. My goal was to get more comfortable speaking in front of business leaders and "stick to the script" more than just rambling on (which I have a tendency to do). It has worked greatly for me in these type of situations. I am much more conscious of what I am saying and how I am saying it. I "go into" Toastmasters mode and my speaking becomes modulated and measured and very aware of what I am going to say and how I am going to say it. I've gained a lot of confidence in speaking in an adhoc manner as well, which is important in meetings.

Most memorable Toastmasters experience or speech:
I think one of the most memorable speeches I've given was "Edit Your Life" which I gave for the 2020 International awards. I made it to District where I came in 2nd. I had great many great coaching sessions with then-member Sandra Centerino and it was an equally terrifying and exhilarating experience.

Advice to someone considering Toastmasters:
I would tell anyone considering it to just come on down and spend some time with us. It really is a very comfortable way to get into what many consider "uncomfortable" public speaking. You go at your own speed, starting with small roles and growing at your own pace. There is great support and everyone has a story about why they are there and can show you how far they've come.

Member's Spotlight: Get to know Leann Ryan, President of Eagle Toastmasters.

I was inspired to join Eagle Toastmasters because I wanted to learn how to speak effectively and powerfully for change. As a senior member of management, I was asked to speak out for others, and I realized the importance of honing my public speaking skills to make a meaningful impact. Joining Eagle Toastmasters has been transformative for both my personal and professional life. It has given me the confidence to articulate my thoughts clearly and persuasively, and it has also provided me with a supportive community that encourages growth and development.

My most memorable Toastmasters experience was definitely the ice breaker speech. It was my first time speaking in front of the group, and I was quite nervous. However, the support and encouragement I received from everyone made it an unforgettable experience. The positive feedback and constructive criticism helped me improve and gave me the motivation to continue my journey in public speaking.
