“Be the buffalo!”

Ever wonder why we shred the sides of the trails out on the Katy Prairie? It might look like destruction, but it’s actually one of several tools we use to keep the prairie healthy.

Coastal prairies are disturbance-dependent ecosystems. Historically, roaming bison, wildfire, and other natural processes regularly disturbed the landscape, helping keep woody plants in check and creating the conditions native grasses and wildflowers need to thrive.

Today, CPC uses a variety of management strategies to mimic those processes, including rotational cattle grazing, prescribed burns, mowing and shredding, and invasive species management.

Along trail edges, shredding helps knock back encroaching woody species, disperse native seed heads, and maintain the regular disturbance that a healthy prairie needs.

Each tool works a little differently, but they share the same goal: keeping the prairie diverse, resilient, and functioning as a prairie.

Because when you’re short on bison, sometimes you’ve got to BE the buffalo! 🦬

Want to make a real, tangible impact on the local environment?

Volunteer at home! 🌱

Through the Coastal Prairie Conservancy’s Great Grow Out program, community members receive locally collected native seeds and supplies, grow them at home, and return the seedlings to CPC to help restore coastal prairie ecosystems across our region.

Want to get involved? Request a Great Grow Out workshop!

We’ll provide the seeds and supplies and guide you through the growing process. No experience necessary!
Whether you’re interested in growing Milkweed for Monarchs or bringing a workshop to your club, school, or community group, we’d love to get you growing.

🚨 We need your help again.

We're asking our community to email [email protected] by Friday, July 31 and urge TxDOT to:
Oppose Alternatives 1, 3, 4, and 5
Support Alternative 2 if a new corridor must be built because it would have the least impact on the Katy Prairie Preserve System.

Email Template (feel free to customize with why the Katy Prairie matters to you):

Subject: 36A North Project (CSJ 0912-00-646) - Comments regarding alternative routes to 36A North

I am writing to strongly oppose Alternative 1 for the proposed 36A North project and to express my additional opposition to Alternatives 3, 4, and 5.

Alternative 1 would adversely affect more than 900 acres of farmland, wetlands, and prairie protected by a Natural Resources Conservation Service conservation easement, as well as an additional 400 acres that the Coastal Prairie Conservancy is working to permanently protect. Even if the roadway does not directly cross these protected properties, the resulting noise, lighting, traffic, altered drainage, and other indirect impacts would diminish the conservation values these easements were established to protect.

I also oppose Alternatives 3, 4, and 5 because they would place a major freeway less than one-half mile from the nearly 20,000-acre Katy Prairie Preserve System. These permanently protected lands provide critical wildlife habitat, improve water quality, reduce downstream flooding, support agriculture, store carbon, and offer exceptional opportunities for birdwatching, photography, education, and outdoor recreation.

If TxDOT determines that a new corridor is necessary, I believe Alternative 2 would have the least impact because it provides greater separation from the preserve system.
I respectfully urge TxDOT to eliminate Alternative 1 from further consideration and not advance Alternatives 3, 4, or 5. Please select an alignment that avoids permanently protected conservation lands and keeps this major transportation corridor as far from the Katy Prairie Preserve System as possible.

Thank you for your consideration.
