In the state of South Carolina they group a stander that Chris needs into wheelchair categories and they pay a certain amount for these types of products. The wheelchairs are much cheaper than the standers. However they are grouped together because they are similar in design. The insurance company will pay what they consider a full amount for a wheelchair. The companies that sell the standers then cannot get compensated for the remaining balance and that's only about 40% of the price of a stander. They can't come back and charge us that other 60% by law and because they aren't going to make enough to sell it so they won't sell it to us even though Chris needs it to further his progress. They will not let us pay the difference. The request is being denied because they're paying what they're calling 100%. Medicaid won't pick up any more of the balance because they're saying that insurance pays 100 % for it but they're only really paying 40% of what it costs. By state law insurance is set up to pay only this amount so they won't sell the stander and you can't even get it unless you pay full price. You may have 50 kids that need a wheelchair and only have two kids that need a stander. They are just not a high demand purchase. That is why they group them together in the contract pricing with insurance companies. We are going to get this for Chris and we are going to have to pay the full price that will be over $5000. The bureaucracy of insurance companies makes us working and having insurance less helpful than someone who has no insurance and using medicade only. Either we pay the full amount of over $5000 or we can't get it for Chris.
