Family Safety Network Speaks at Walker Rotary Luncheon

Tomi Palmer, Executive Director for the Family Safety Network, and Maggie Gudmundson, Outreach Advocate, were guest speakers at the May 12 Rotary lunch meeting. The Family Safety Network is a non-profit tax-exempt organization providing services to victims of domestic abuse and their families. Their mission is to advocate for social change to end the cycle of domestic violence in our communities. The Family Safety Network serves Cass, Hubbard, and Clearwater counties, with offices in Walker and Park Rapids. Offices are open 9-4 Monday through Friday and a 24-hr hotline is available outside of business hours (Crisis Line: 800 324-8151.)

In 2025, the Family Safety Network served 398 individuals, including infants and seniors, and provided over 7000 services. Services include confidential individual advocacy and crisis intervention, referrals, and accompanying individuals to court. Each office has legal clinics and kiosks. Gift cards for emergency services, basic budgeting, and assistance with both short- and long-term housing are also provided.

Funding comes from state and federal grants, foundation grants, and individual and corporate contributions. Unfortunately, the Family Safety Network may see a 20% decrease in federal and state funding due to budget cuts in 2027. For more information, please go to www.familysafetynetwork.net.

Deep Portage Learning Center Director Updates Rotarians

Did you know that the Walker Area has a wonderful outdoor educational center right in our own back yard? Located east and south of Hackensack, Deep Portage Learning Center is focused on helping students and adults appreciate and enjoy the great outdoors.

Deep Portage Learning Center’s Development Director Dan Ryan was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting on Tuesday May 5. The Center serves as a residential environmental learning center during the school year, providing opportunities for young people to learn outdoor skills and natural history and participate in STEM-related activities. In 2025, more than 7000 people attended Deep Portage, including 4000+ students. Local WHA 4th grade students participated in 2 Day Sessions this year.

Funding for Deep Portage comes from the Minnesota Legislature and Lottery and grants from several organizations, which help keep user fees low. A recent Five Wings Arts Council grant created the Ojibwe Star Map Mural. New canoes were funded by a grant from the Bernick Family Foundation.

Popular annual events include the Saturday Winter Rendezvous. This event is open to the public and includes winter activities competitions. Ice Fishing equipment was improved this year with heaters and Otter hub houses.

Every season presents unique opportunities for exploring outdoors. Ryan encourages everyone to visit Deep Portage and experience the wonders of our environment. For more information, please go to www.deep-portage.org.

WHA Students Honored for Completing the Annual Rotary Reading Challenge

Rotarians are passionate about helping all children become excellent readers.

The Rotary Reading Challenge was started more than 20 years ago when Rotarian Mike Nelson and WHA Staff partnered to develop programs that would encourage reading. Today the program continues, led by Rotarians Sherren Fosse and Alice Groth and many volunteers who help students with reading.

Over the years, the Rotary Reading Challenge has evolved. For the last several years, the Challenge has centered around a central theme, books specifically targeted to students in Pre-K and Kindergarten and students in 1st through 5th grades, and a final week of celebratory activities.

This year’s theme was chocolate. The Rotary Reading Challenge was held in February. Pre-K and Kindergarten students heard all about Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory, while grades 1 to 5 read about The Chocolate Touch. Each week students explored different aspects of each book and participated in fun activities. One of the favorite activities was hunting for the stuffed chocolate.

Completion of the Challenge was celebrated during the first week in March with a different fun activity each day. Pajama Day was the favorite. Students also voted on their favorite kind of chocolate. Dark chocolate won, On the last day, each student got to pick a book to take home and read.

Rotary honors 2nd Graders each year because studies show that this is the age when future reading skills are determined. By presenting each student with a certificate of completion and a medal, Rotarians hope to instill a positive view of reading that will encourage students to become life-long readers.

WHA 2nd Graders show off certificates for Completing Rotary’s Reading Challenge. Walker Rotary Honors Dale and Harriet Jones and the Library Staff

Walker Rotarians honored Dale and Harriet Jones and the library staff at the April 14 luncheon which was held in the lower level of the Dale and Harriet Jones Walker Public Library. Lori Duchesneau and Amy Efta were present and represented the Jones family. Library staff honored included Branch Manager Carrie Huston, Linda Reis, and Stacey Zbasnik.

Huston provided an update on the library, including several projects that are underway to finish the new building. Those projects include a Donor Wall to honor those who contributed $1000 or more to building the new library, an History and Culture Exhibit, a rotating art exhibit, and an outdoor area to include a pavilion, picnic table, and seating between the parking lot and the ball parks. The City of Walker had hoped to obtain a grant from Sourcewell to fund the outdoor project, but recently discovered that the project will likely not be eligible for the grant. Alternate sources of funding will be explored. The total cost of the outdoor space is estimated at $30,000. Anyone interested in supporting the outdoor area should contact Carrie Huston at 218 547-6019 or Kathi Cadmus, President of the Friends of the Walker Public Library, at 218 547-6444.

In closing Carrie asks us to support our local library by reading to a child, bringing a child to the library, and attending library events.
