Now that the colder weather is rolling in, it is the perfect time to pack up the garage projects and get into some indoor making.

We’re opening the shop doors this Friday, November 6th, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for our next open house.
If you have winter hobbies or creative projects on your list, come check out the equipment we have set up for the community:

Laser cutting and engraving
3D printers
Woodworking tools and build space
Electronics and soldering stations

Vinyl cutting, resin, and small craft areas
When: Friday, 11/6 | 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

No registration needed—just drop by, take a look around, and chat with other local makers about what you are working on.

Ever wondered how 3D printing actually works?

Join us Sunday, October 18 for Intro to 3D Printing at Grand River Makerspace. We'll cover how to get into the hobby, how to prep and slice files, and a few ways to start designing your own stuff.

10am–12pm: Beginner Class ($20 non-members / $10 GRM members)

12–1pm: Show-n-Tell (free). Bring something you've printed, or just come see what others are making.

Here's something people don't always know about Grand River Makerspace: every single open shift this year was run by a volunteer.

That added up to more than 2,400 hours, roughly 50 hours every week. 32 people took shifts across 192 open days. At the standard rate for volunteer time, that's about $87,000 of their time given to this place.

A huge thank you to everyone who signed up, especially Pat, Chris, Dan, Steve, Josh, Jeff, Lysie, Alantha, Adam and Bill, who put in the most hours. And to everyone who covered a shift when someone else couldn't.

Some numbers from year one that don’t usually make the highlight reel.

11.8 kg of filament went through our 3D printers (that's only a fraction we're sure). 132 ml of UV ink got printed onto just about everything. 70 sheets of plywood, basswood and cherry went under the laser.

The Grand River Rumble took off faster than we expected: 29 combat robot kits sold, 36 builders signed up for the founding season, and 6 arena sponsors stepped up. We also had 23 kids at Maker Camp this summer.

And 60 of you donated, adding up to $4,150. For a small nonprofit that’s a big deal, and it went straight back into tools and materials.

Thank you. All of this is what keeps the lights on.

We went back through every workshop from our first year and counted what people actually built and took home. It came to 157 projects.

61 sets of resin dice (dice casting night is officially a phenomenon). 20 laser-engraved tumblers, 13 holiday ornaments, 12 photo magnets, 9 bread knives, 9 sewn pouches, 8 cutting boards, 8 page holders and 5 leather belts.

People also learned the machines: 23 passed woodshop safety, 25 took 3D design or printing, 16 learned the CNC router and 14 learned the laser.
And 115 of you just came to hang out at First Friday open houses. 241 different people came through our classes and events, and 46 came back for more.

A year ago we unlocked the doors at 25 N. Park and honestly weren’t sure what would happen. Turns out a lot of you wanted a place to make stuff.

Here’s what year one looked like:

-84 members, from monthly folks to whole households
-237 people came through a workshop. That’s 65 sessions of 24 different classes, everything from dice casting to cutting boards to woodshop safety
-200+ people stopped by an open house, a Sunday Crafternoon or a meetup
-56 volunteers kept the lights on, and none of this works without them

Thank you to everyone who took a class, signed up, brought a friend, or gave up a Tuesday night to staff the shop. We’re a small nonprofit and every one of you is the reason we made it to year two.

Schedule Update for Tuesday:

We are closing our shop floor and equipment access to general project work this Tuesday at 4:00 PM as we transform the space for our Open Pitch Night!

To give our presenters the floor and a quiet setting, all tools will be offline for the remainder of the evening.
