What a great group of students!

For Earth Day, Our 5th graders raised money for the Hemlock Tree Non- profit organization in order to save this species of trees. They raised a total of $184 which will enable 100 trees to be saved. The winning homeroom was Miss Evans’s homeroom and they received a popsicle party. Pictured are The Hemlock Tree organizers David and Carla Hedden along with Warrior Honor advisor/ teacher Sabrina Ray. Also pictured are our Warrior Honor officers: Lydia Pipkin, Isaac Clay, Taylor Brown and Caroline Thomas.

This is the hemlock that is poisonous, not the Hemlock tree.....

Stay away from this stuff!! This is Poison Hemlock and it can hurt you..bad.

Due to our very wet spring, this stuff is thriving and growing fast! In the coming weeks you will see fields of white flowers.

Not all white flowers are bad. So,how do you know what's poisonous and what isn't ? Look at the stem. If you see purple splotches then that is a sign it's poison hemlock.

If you touch this, then imagine poison ivy but x100.

A growing body of studies in recent years has shown that, thanks in part to decades of diligent conservation work, turtles are not just holding on — their populations are, in many cases, exploding.

Researchers led by Professor Graeme Hays of Deakin University in Melbourne this year compiled 61 datasets of nesting locations from around the world. They found just five sites where populations were declining. In 28, they were increasing — often dramatically. Cabo Verde’s Sal Island, off the northwest coast of Africa, the number of loggerhead nests has increased to 35,000 in 2020 from 500 in 2008 — a 70-fold improvement.

Since turtle conservation took off in the 1970s, moreover, humans have in many cases turned from aggressors into protectors. A 1975 treaty banning trade in endangered species shut down global commerce in meat, shells and leather. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers fan out each year across beaches on six continents to count nests and the tracks that mothers and hatchlings leave on the sand

The City of Melbourne initiative to assign email addresses to trees has unintentionally resulted in a flood of love letters from around the world.

Officials assigned the trees ID numbers and email addresses as part of a program designed to make it easier for citizens to report problems like dangerous branches.

Since then, thousands of emails to trees have been received, most from tree-loving locals but some have come from all corners of the globe including Brazil, Russia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK, the USA, and even Moldova.

Some letter writers are expressing their admiration, love, puns, life updates, intense homesickness or making suggestions such as to “keep away from fire”.

According to the Urban Forest and Ecology team, the most popular tree is a Golden Elm on Punt Road. This tree is about 80 years old, and is listed by the National Trust of Australia as a Significant Tree at a state level.
