October 1st marked the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we were grateful to spend it alongside the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and so many incredible community partners at the 3rd annual Purple Light Nights.

We are grateful for a community that keeps showing up, speaking up, and reminding those experiencing DV that they do not have to walk this journey alone.

This month, we can all play a part:
💜Volunteer with or donate to an organization supporting victims of DV.
💜Educate yourself and others about the signs of abuse.
💜Speak up and stand with those who may feel like they don’t have a voice.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please know there are people who care and are ready to help.

CeCe stopped by to see us recently, and getting to sit with her and hear how she’s doing was such a gift. You could see the joy and hope in her, and it made us stop and celebrate how far she has come.

Before coming to Poiema, she was struggling with addiction and unsure of what her future would look like. Today, she continues to walk in her faith, maintains steady employment, and is building a life she once wasn’t sure was possible.

Recently, she returned to one of her greatest passions: theater. 🎭

“By the grace of God, I’ve been sober for two and a half years. I am now in a place where miracles happen every day. It wasn’t easy getting back on stage. With the help of my family, the cast and crew, and especially God, I am able to share my passion for theater.” - CeCe

She later shared: “I’m just so thankful, this place (Poiema) saved my life.”

We want to send a very special thank you to Darlene Breck for so generously allowing us to use Southern Maryland Business Center for our recent board training. The space was beautiful, and Darlene went above and beyond to help us with everything we needed. We’re grateful for her hospitality and for the care she showed our team.

We’re also incredibly thankful to Michelle Sullivan for leading a phenomenal training for our board. She shared practical tools, wisdom, and perspective that helped strengthen us and gave us fresh momentum for the work ahead.

Thank you Darlene and Michelle for giving your time, space, and gifts to Poiema. 🧡🌿

Last week, some of the Poiema team had the opportunity to attend the Christian Alliance for Orphans 2026 Summit. The theme was “Fewer Branches, Better Fruit.” 🌿

We gathered with thousands of people from around the world who are united in Christ to care wisely and well for vulnerable children and families.

In a world constantly telling us to do more, what might it look like for us to prune, simplify, and do less...not to accomplish less, but to ABIDE more deeply in God and make room to watch him work?

We feel filled and ready to continue this work of restoration! ❤️

We currently have a need for two twin beds here at Poiema. We’d love sturdy, solid-wood frames, mattresses, and box springs so that each bed is ready to use. 🛌

Yesterday, part of our team went to the United Way of the National Capital Area’s Partner Summit. It was SUCH an honor connecting with nonprofit leaders doing important, life-changing work throughout our region.

We learned more about who ALICE is: people who are working and earning above poverty level, but still not earning enough to cover the basic cost of living. This matters to Poiema, because we see firsthand that employment is only one part of rebuilding a stable life. Women here are also learning how to budget, plan for what comes next, and build the kind of stability that lasts. And that work cannot happen in isolation.

Tiffany Barber, our Executive Director, had the opportunity to share what our partnership with United Way NCA means and how valuable those connections and resources are to the work we do. Impact multiplies when we work with one another!!

Thank you, United Way of the National Capital Area, for bringing us all together and for giving language and data to the realities so many working families face.

For years, Ken Weikel and the Chick-fil-A team have shown up for Poiema with such generosity and consistency. Since 2021, they’ve supported Poiema in so many ways. One of those is providing lunch each month for Be Our Guest, an event where people from the community can come experience the heart of our mission.

Today, Ken and his team came to Be Our Guest and presented Poiema with a check from our recent gallon fundraiser, where HUNDREDS of gallons were sold in just one week to support the women and children we serve.

It was such a full-circle moment to receive that gift at an event they have faithfully supported for years.

Thank you to everyone who bought a gallon and support this work. And to Ken, Melissa, and the Chick-fil-A teams at Waldorf and Smallwood Drive, thank you for continuing to believe in this mission, invest in it, and show up for the women and children of Poiema.
