Today we salute the brave men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian uniformed volunteer component of the U.S. Coast Guard, established on this date in 1939. On September 6, 1969, U.S. Army SPC Edward Gerasimowicz had finished patrolling with his dog and was in camp when the warning sirens sounded and โ€œRockets in the airโ€ blared out. As he was running for a bunker, a devastating explosion hit the base, launching Gerasimowicz into the air.

A tremendous congratulations to U.S. Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr. who received the Medal of Honor yesterday from President Donald J. Trump at The White House.

Born into a sharecropping family in South Carolina, James Capers Jr. joined the Marine Corps in 1956 and went on to become one of the serviceโ€™s pioneering Force Reconnaissance Marines.

During a reconnaissance mission near Phu Loc, Vietnam, in April 1967, then-Second Lieutenant Capers continued leading his team after suffering multiple gunshot and fragmentation wounds. Refusing evacuation, he coordinated the defense and extraction until every Marine under his command was safely aboard the helicopter.

The National Purple Heart Honor Mission was pleased to salute Major Capers' service and sacrifice during the 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project Mission where he was the National Honoree.

A tremendous thank you to Resorts World Hudson Valley and Resorts World Catskills for their sponsorship of the 2026 Purple Heart Patriot Project Mission. Yesterday, two-time Purple Heart recipient and National Purple Heart Honor Mission Board Member First Vice President Daniel Clarino, Second Vice President Nathan Q. Parker, and board member MaryKay Messenger presented Angela Rein and Chris Verini of Resorts World Genting with a plaque featuring the images of the 2026 Mission honorees in appreciation of the company's support for our nation's Purple Heart Heroes.

In order to honor as many of our heroes as possible, and educate a new generation of Americans about the sacrifice of our Purple Heart recipients, the National Purple Heart Honor Mission is establishing a traveling exhibition to bring the story of the Purple Heart to the nation. The โ€œPurple Hearts Across America Tourโ€ will provide the public free access to the Tribute Center allowing Americans of all ages to learn about the service and sacrifice of the more than 1.8 million Americans who bear the scars of war or have lost their lives in conflicts around the globe.
