Americal Civic Center

Americal Civic Center The Americal Civic Center, a former State armory, celebrated its 100th anniversary on January 15, 2013.

The Civic Center has two spaces available for rentals, the Drill Hall (gym) and Heritage Room (meeting/function space). The Americal Civic Center is housed in the former State Armory building at 467 Main Street, which was dedicated on January 15, 1913. The building was used by a number of military companies during the first half of the 20th century, and the name was changed to the Massachusetts

National Guard Armory. In 1975 the Town of Wakefield purchased the building from the state for one dollar, and it underwent substantial renovations during the following year. The name was chosen from 81 entries to a contest sponsored by the Wakefield Daily Item. On April 21, 1976, the building was officially rededicated as the Americal Civic Center. The structure was maintained by the Department of Public Works for many years until 1983, when a private group called the Americal Civic Center Association took over stewardship. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, and is now used for public meetings and events.
