People of color fought on both sides of the American Revolution — and with much more at stake

251 years ago today, the Battle of Bunker Hill became one of the defining early conflicts of the American Revolution.

The tradition of remembering the battle began not long after. In 1786, Charlestown residents marked the anniversary with a public celebration connected to the newly completed Charlestown Bridge, gathering on and around Bunker Hill to reflect on the events of June 17, 1775, and the legacy left behind.

More than two centuries later, the story of the battle continues to shape the community and serve as a reminder of the people, sacrifices and ideals tied to these historic grounds.

Happy Bunker Hill Day! June 17th 1775

On June 17, 1775, colonial militia faced the British Army at the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the first major battles of the American Revolution. Though British forces claimed the field, the casualties they suffered were staggering.

While named after the highest hill in the area, Bunker Hill, the battle took place on Breed's Hill, the hill situated closest to the Charles River.

Their courage rallied support across the 13 colonies and showed the world this was more than a rebellion. It was a step toward American Independence.

As we approach America's 250th, the Bunker Hill Monument stands as a lasting reminder of what this nation was built on.

Before he was a landholder in Plymouth Colony, George Soule crossed the Atlantic in 1620 as part of another man’s household.
In colonial America, an indentured servant was someone bound by contract to work for a set number of years in exchange for passage, room, board, or training. Indentured servitude was not slavery — it was time-limited and contractual — but it was demanding. Servants had limited autonomy and were legally obligated to fulfill the terms of their agreement.
George traveled aboard the Mayflower in the household of Edward Winslow. As a young man without independent wealth, this arrangement likely provided opportunity: passage to the New World and eventual freedom to establish his own life.
And establish it he did. Within a few years, George was listed in land divisions and later became a property holder in Duxbury. His life illustrates something powerful about early Plymouth — social mobility was possible, but it required endurance, labor, and resilience.
Understanding indentured servitude helps us better answer the question: Who were George & Mary Soule? They were not elites arriving with wealth. They were individuals who built stability through work and perseverance.
