South Sudan: Well Worth the Wait

Given the instability in the region, it had been well over 10 years since PEER Servants had been able to visit its South Sudanese Partner, SALT, in person. Earlier this month, that changed, thanks to the availability of our Kenyan and South Sudanese PEER Associates and Volunteers who were able to make the trip. Abraham, Atieno, Kodia and Kokole had a wonderful time with the SALT Team. SALT is on the front lines of extending the kingdom in the very challenging Region of Yei and Morobo counties. We applaud their work, were blessed by their hospitality, and look forward to partnering with them to extend much more of the kingdom of heaven to Yei and Morobo (and beyond!) in the years ahead.

Boston: Celebrating and Thanking Our Volunteers

We do it once a year - our Volunteer Appreciation Party! PEER Servants Volunteers come from over 35 countries, so unfortunately, we cannot gather all of them in one place at one time, but for those who could get to the Boston area this past Saturday, we had a wonderful time together. PEER Servants is made up of primarily Volunteers who are passionate to see the kingdom of heaven come to earth. Given that high calling, they are willing to give up so much to make it happen. And, so it's only appropriate that we take at least one opportunity each year to recognize and thank them. God blessed us with a beautiful day (keeping the rain at bay!), Champions BBQ blessed us with a bit of heaven on earth with their steak tips and grilled salmon, and we enjoyed being together with this amazing global family that only God could have brought together.

Thank you, PEER Servants Volunteers, for ALL you do to make Jesus vision - that the kingdom would come "on earth as it is in heaven" - a reality for thousands around the world!

Philippines: From Correction to Connection!

PEER Servants is blessed to partner with a number of organizations around the world who are on the frontlines of extending quality education to those who have historically not had access to it. One of those partners is The Center for Community Transformation (CCT) in the Philippines. They do phenomenal work offering two high-quality schools to tribal children - one in Mindanao and the other in Palawan. Our partnership involves providing training, networking with other education organizations, access to financial resources, and general encouragement.

Earlier this month, PEER Servants Volunteer, Duschia, provided training entitled "From Correction to Connection" that covered how teachers can encourage positive behavior management and collaborative problem solving for today's classroom. The session was well-attended and received by the CCT education staff and they are looking forward to more trainings from the Volunteers on our PEER Servants Education Team.

Uganda: Three is Better than One!

There are over 20 Regions around the world in which PEER Servants partners with local organizations, at their invitation, to establish what we call "Palpable Kingdom Presence" - a fulfillment of Jesus' vision that the kingdom would come "on earth as it is in heaven". One of those Regions is West Nile, Uganda, and one of many things special about this Region is that it is the only one in which PEER partners with not one but three local organizations. So, in last week's visit that PEER Associates Abraham and Atieno had to West Nile, they got to visit CAFECC, PAD, and SALT Arua. The picture here is of all three organizations gathering the last night they were together for a closing dinner.

Establishing "palpable kingdom presence" in West Nile is so grand that it is far bigger than PEER Servants or any one of these local Partners can do on their own. We were encouraged by the desire for collaboration rather than competition that Abraham and Atieno witnessed among these Partners while they were together. Pray for them - that their passion for the kingdom will exceed their passion for individual or institutional glory.

Abraham and Atieno had a great week in West Nile and have now been joined by PEER Servants Volunteers Kodia and Kokole for a week in Yei, South Sudan with our Partner, SALT Yei. Stay tuned for "good news" from Yei and Morobo counties and the palpable kingdom presence SALT Yei is establishing there.

Australia: So Long for Now, Dear Brother

We received the news that our dear brother and close PEER Servants friend, David Cohen, went home to heaven this past Saturday, August 1. David and his wife, Kathi, were dear friends to the Global PEER Servants Family. We met in Thailand at a Microfinance Conference where David was asked to come in and speak at the last minute given the inability of another keynote speaker to make it. David spoke so eloquently - you would have never known he was doing it on the spur of the moment!

David and Kathi then joined us in 2007 in Peru for our global conference, Ricchari (the Quechua word for "Awakening"), and again in 2015 for our global conference, Pagdiriwang (the Tagalog word for "Celebration"). He was our spiritual challenge speaker, encouraging us to awaken to God's calling on our lives.

In 2018, when the Board gave Leslie and Todd Engelsen a 6-month sabbatical and Grace Chapel Lexington offered them a trip anywhere in the world for spiritual respite and encouragement, the Engelsens chose to spend time with David and Kathi in the Blue Mountains of Australia. It was a wonderfully restorative time where David's wit, love of life and people, and love of God shined brightly.

The years since then were ones where Parkinsons made its advances until this past Saturday when Jesus said, "It's time. Come home to your new body." We will miss our close friend, but we know we will see him again.

Thank You, Father, for David and Kathi Cohen and the way you used both of them to allow the Global PEER Family to experience and extend more of your kingdom. Comfort Kathi now, and empower us to pick up the slack in this kingdom work felt in David's absence. Thank You for the life You breathed into him.

Zambia: First Day as a Paid Radiographer!

Persis is one of the PEER Teens Zambia Scholars who pursued a degree in healthcare - in her case, radiography. She graduated with flying colors, but like many graduates in Zambia, a paid position was not currently available. She accepted her first appointment to the civil service of the Republic of Zambia as a Radiographer and was posted in Western Province, Mongu District, at Lewanika General Hospital, but she volunteered her time - they weren't able to add her to payroll. Then last month she got a letter stating that she had been posted to work from Luapula Province, Milenge District, at Milenge District Hospital. This new position came with a paycheck! Earlier this week, Persis started her paid position as a Radiographer, and the picture below captures her on her first day at work.

We are so, so proud of Persis and so grateful to her Sponsors - a couple from Upstate New York who made Persis's undergraduate education possible through our PEER Teens Scholars program. In sending us the good news, Persis recently wrote: "I just want to thank God for everything he has done in my life and how he has blessed PEER Servants to be able to bless me and many others." Just imagine the people God will bless through Persis!

Sri Lanka: Who Covers the Cost of Running this Microfinance Program?

Earlier this year, YGro-HEED (PEER Servants' Sri Lankan Partner) celebrated 25 years of further extending a bit of heaven to earth. In those 25 years, they've made over 23,000 micro-loans totaling over $7 million! So, who paid for all of those operating expenses - staff salaries, motorbikes, fuel, training, rent, bank fees, etc.? Was it PEER Servants? Well, maybe at the very beginning of the program. But for many years now, the operating expenses of YGro-HEED have been covered by the micro-entrepreneurs served through the program. Their small interest payments, when added up across all of the small business people being served, MORE than cover the cost of operating the program. In fact, there is a surplus that allows YGro to support other programs for the materially poor!

What's more - over 75% of the microentrepreneurs served are women, and often women who were severely affected by the country's long civil war - losing a husband, son, brother, father, etc.

Never underestimate what a person can achieve when someone (you!) believes in them and a wonderful team of people like those at YGro-HEED come alongside them with what they need to pursue their dreams. These women and thousands of others are offering sustainable development to their Sri Lankan neighbors as they build their small businesses, provide for their families, and repay their micro-loans. Zambia: Here's What a New Ophthalmologist Looks Like!

Big-time congratulations to PEER Teens Zambia Scholar, Alick Kalonga, Jr., on his recent graduation from Levy Mwanawasa University in Lusaka with a Bachelor Degree in Ophthalmology! Many of the PEER Teens Zambia Scholars have been pursuing professions in healthcare. Among them are a future Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, Radiologist, Physician's Assistant, Nurse, and more along with this Ophthalmologist!

Alick still has a bit of a path before him before he can add the title "Dr." before his name, but he is well on his way! His proud Sponsors are a couple from Greater Boston and the wife of that couple and Alick were able to meet in person at our 2024 PEER Teens Scholars Conference in Nairobi.

We thank God for Alick, the vision he has to improve healthcare in Zambia, his willingness to work hard in his studies, and his passion for following Jesus and seeing more of the kingdom in Zambia as it is in heaven. Congratulations, Alick!

Peru: Valuing Elderly Knowledge and Wisdom, Improving Healthcare

We get very excited at PEER Servants when we see our Global Partners grow, expand to add new programs that can extend more of the kingdom of heaven to earth, and attract new Donor Partners to support them in their work. That is definitely true of our Peruvian Partner, Kallarisunchis.

Kallarisunchis is delighted to share that the “Roots that Heal” project is officially underway, thanks to the support of a grant from a Swiss NGO. This project serves to preserve and honor the wisdom of the older generation in the use and healing properties of medicinal plants. Drawing on the wealth of knowledge and experience of 28 older adults, they have identified and planted a variety of medicinal plants native to the region. Not only will they market these products but also collaborate with the local university to compile a digital library of medicinal plants that can be passed down to future generations. What a wonderful way to cultivate life, tradition and hope – reaping health for the community!

Our God has blessed us with so much - those who have wisdom and knowledge given the many years they have lived, various means to address our healthcare needs, and most of all, His Son, whose love, grace, and mercy allow us to experience more of the kingdom of heaven on earth and extend it to others.
