Wakefield, KS VFW Post #7774 Republican Valley Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7774 By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together a

nd formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum.

POW / MIA highway and bridge signs. Huge update on funds received. Huge thanks to POM of Kansas LLC. $10,000 donation and other local donations have put us within reach of our goal. $17,771.21 collected and only $3,198.79 to go.

Anyone wanting to help us reach our goal, get your donations in. Planning a Motorcycle ride for last weekend in April that may hopefully be the event that gets us to our goal.

🌻 Update on current Veterans Legislation 🌻

There has been a lot of movement at the State Capitol this past week on veteran-related legislation:

🔹 HB 2274 (Purple Heart Day recognition and Homeless Veterans ID Card) has passed out of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs and is now headed to the Senate Floor.

🔹 HB 2214 (enacting the Safeguarding American Veteran Empowerment Act, which would limit compensation for assisting veterans with benefits matters) is expected to be worked in the House Veterans and Military Committee on Thursday, February 12. At this time, no amendments have been released, so the outcome remains uncertain. HB 2214 does not require these agencies (Claim Sharks) to be accredited by the VA.

We urge all VFW Department of Kansas Members and our Patriots of the Auxiliary to contact your local state House and Senate representative ask them to defeat HB2214 and instead advance and support House Bill 2646 and ask the Senate to advance and support SB 433. Both bills require agencies that assist veterans with their disability claims to be accredited.

If you would like to reach out to the members of the House Committee on Veterans and Military. You may find the members and their official contact information on this link:

📅 Legislative Turnaround – February 19
“Turnaround” is a key mid-session deadline in the Kansas Legislature. Most bills must pass out of their house of origin (House or Senate) by this date to remain active for the session. Bills that do not meet this deadline are generally considered dead for the year unless exempt.
