🌍A year ago, Roben Musa arrived in the United States as part of PH International’s Youth Ambassador Program carrying more than just luggage. He was carrying uncertainty about his future.

Before the program, Roben had been expelled from school and struggled to see a path forward. But over four weeks in the U.S., surrounded by fellow Youth Ambassadors from the Philippines, Pacific Island countries, and Burma, something changed. ✨

Through leadership workshops, conversations with peers, visits to schools and communities, and daily life with host families, Roben found something he hadn’t expected: support.

💬 “Before the program began, I expected my fellow participants to be competitive and self-centered. But as I got to know them, I realized they were actually helping me become the best version of myself.”

After returning home to the Philippines, Roben helped create a “Calm Room” at his new school: a space where students can manage stress, regroup, and stay connected to learning instead of being pushed out.

Stories like Roben’s are a reminder that exchange programs are not only about travel. They are about giving young people the opportunity, confidence, and support to grow into leaders in their own communities.

As PH International prepares to welcome new Youth Ambassador groups to Vermont this year, we’re reminded that sometimes a single opportunity can change the direction of a young person’s life and the lives of those around them.

PH International still exists today because people continue to support its work 🤝
Not because the challenges are simple, but because the impact is long-term and it often unfolds quietly, over time.

Through exchanges, training, and community engagement programs 🌍, PH International works with individuals at different stages of their journey, supporting them as they build skills, confidence, and meaningful connections.

These are not one-time experiences. They are moments that shift perspectives, strengthen decision-making, and open pathways that might not have been visible before.

By contributing, you help sustain programs that:
🌐 connect people across cultures and backgrounds
🧠 strengthen critical thinking and leadership
🚀 create opportunities that extend beyond the program itself

Support like this is what allows the work to continue and to reach more people.

“Expect the unexpected.” 🌍

When PH International organized its first exchange in 1985, the world looked very different.

The Cold War was still shaping how people saw each other. Travel across the Iron Curtain was rare. Encounters between young people from opposite sides were not just unusual, they were often viewed with suspicion, shaped by politics and limited information.

For Todd Kingsbury, a participant in PH’s first exchange to the Soviet Union, the experience began with uncertainty.

The setting felt controlled. Interactions were formal. Much of what they saw seemed carefully arranged.

But the real exchange did not happen there.

It happened later, in a private home, around a dinner table. 🍽️

That is where conversations became real. Where curiosity replaced hesitation. Where people began to see each other beyond the narratives they had grown up with.

💬 “When you’re sitting at a dinner table, you really get to know people… the labels don’t matter anymore. You just see people.” — Todd Kingsbury

Looking back, what made that first exchange significant was not that it changed political realities.

It was that it created space, however small, for honest human connection 🤝 at a time when that was anything but common.

That idea has remained at the core of PH’s work ever since.

Today, PH International continues to facilitate exchange programs across regions including Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, Africa, and Asia 🌐, connecting young people, educators, and professionals through shared experiences that build understanding and long-term relationships.

Exchange does not remove complexity.

But it helps people understand it with greater clarity.

🚨When school bells turn into sirens, childhood changes overnight.

In Ukraine 🇺🇦, many young people are growing up with uncertainty, interrupted lessons, and constant stress. Through the Justice for Ukrainian Youth program, PH International, supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, is helping them regain something essential: a sense of safety 🛡️, confidence 💬, and voice.

Across Bucha, Bolhrad, Lviv, Lutsk, and Kropyvnytskyi, Youth Justice Clubs create safe spaces where teenagers can speak openly, build critical thinking skills, and strengthen their understanding of rights and responsibilities ⚖️.

Instead of staying silent, they are learning to:
• navigate complex topics like law during conflict
• communicate boundaries and make informed decisions
• think critically about real-world challenges
• take part in community engagement and community impact projects

💬 “Through the classes, I developed my critical thinking and overcame my fear of speaking up.”

The program also works with prosecutors, investigators, and other professionals, strengthening their ability to support children and document war-related violations, even in extremely challenging conditions.

At the same time, animated videos 🎬 created with Ukrainian teenagers help their peers:
⚠️ recognize risks
🚫 avoid harmful situations
📱 safely document violations
🧩cope with stress during conflict

Even in the most difficult circumstances, young people are finding their voices and adults are standing beside them.

Ana Mosiashvili is from Telavi, a city in eastern Georgia 🇬🇪, where opportunities like extracurricular programs or international exchanges are not always within easy reach.

She joined the Access Program, implemented by PH International in Georgia, during the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when communication and social interaction felt especially limited. What began as an online English class quickly became something more. It gave her the confidence to speak up 🗣️, share her ideas, and connect with others in new ways.

One experience still stands out: the Access summer camp ☀️. Through teamwork 🤝, games 🎯, and problem-solving activities, learning felt practical, engaging, and real.

🎓Today, Ana studies English at one of the oldest and most reputable universities in Tbilisi on a full merit-based scholarship. She also recently spent a semester at Humboldt University in Berlin 🇩🇪 through an academic exchange program ✈️. Studying alongside peers from different countries pushed her to think more critically and engage with new perspectives.

She continued building those skills through programs at the American Corner in Telavi, focusing on social activism, media literacy, and career development 📚.

In her hometown, youth engagement remains a challenge. For Ana, that is exactly why it matters to stay active, get involved, and make use of every opportunity available.

🌍For her, those opportunities started with Access and grew into experiences that reached far beyond Telavi.

👉Behind the Scenes: Quiet Leadership

Leadership in international development rarely follows a predictable path. Much of the work happens quietly behind the scenes, without headlines and often without recognition. For PH International’s Executive Director Meg Harris, it has been the result of more than three decades of work shaped by international experiences, mentorship, and commitment to connecting people across cultures. 👥

Growing up overseas and spending her formative years in Africa shaped how she understood the world and the role international engagement could play in helping people better understand one another.

💬 “I realized very quickly in my undergrad years that what mattered most to me was having an international dimension in my work,” she recalls. “Helping people understand that there is a much bigger world out there.”

When she joined PH International eleven years ago, she did so as head of development, focused on strengthening programs and expanding partnerships. As a member of the organization’s senior management team, she worked closely with the Executive Director, Finance Director, and Country Directors. When the previous Executive Director announced her retirement, Meg applied for the position and was selected by the board of directors for the role.

The transition itself was gradual. But the full weight of the job became clear during a period of unprecedented disruption for the international development sector last year.

🌐Following changes in U.S. foreign assistance policies, many organizations across the field lost major funding streams almost overnight. PH was no exception. Several of its largest programs were paused, forcing the organization to quickly reassess its structure and make difficult decisions about the future.

💬 “It was the moment when the responsibility really sank in,” Meg says. “We had to make difficult decisions quickly, financially, operationally and for our team.”

The organization was forced to downsize significantly within a short period of time. For Meg, the most important priority throughout that process was the people who make PH’s work possible.

“Our staff had to be the first consideration in every decision,” she says. “This work is not easy. People do it because they believe in it.”

Despite the challenges, the experience also reinforced something she believes defines PH as an organization: its ability to adapt.

The changes also accelerated a shift that had already been underway within PH, moving from largely independent country offices toward a more integrated global team. Today, staff across locations collaborate closely, sharing systems, resources and expertise.

Ask Meg what a typical day as Executive Director looks like, and she laughs.
“There really isn’t a typical day.”

Much of her time is now spent balancing strategic planning, financial oversight, fundraising, staffing decisions, and supporting program teams across the organization. What continues to motivate her is the same belief that guided her into the field decades ago.

“If I didn’t believe in the work, I wouldn’t be able to do it,” she says.

Another part of the role she values deeply is mentorship. Having learned from both inspiring mentors and difficult experiences earlier in her career, Meg now sees helping others grow as an important part of leadership.

“I’ve had incredible mentors along the way,” she says. “Now I feel fortunate to be at a stage of my career where I can support others in their own paths.” 🌱

For young professionals considering careers in international development, her advice is simple but thoughtful. 💡

💬 “Follow the work that feels meaningful to you,” she says. “Figure out not only what you enjoy doing, but also what doesn’t interest you. That can be just as important in shaping your path.”

And above all:
“Find work that fits for your values and your sense of purpose. This field requires commitment, patience, and resilience, but it is also incredibly rewarding.”

Behind the programs and partnerships that define PH International’s work around the world is a form of quiet leadership, the kind that rarely appears in headlines. It is the steady work carried forward by people who believe deeply in the mission.

Over the years, that resilience has been shaped by the culture within PH itself. It is a culture built by people working alongside one another across different locations, cultures, and lived experiences.

For Meg Harris, that mission of building understanding between people continues to guide the work she does every day and the work of the teams she leads across PH. After decades in the field, that belief remains at the heart of the organization’s quiet, determined leadership. 🌍

🏀 On a basketball court, there is no language barrier.

No political divide.

No cultural hierarchy.

Only the game.

In recent alumni reflections on sports exchange programs, one theme surfaced repeatedly: sport dissolves separation.

Participants described moments where differences simply faded. Serbian and Albanian youth played on the same team. American athletes trained alongside peers who had only known each other through media narratives. Coaches witnessed rival communities connecting through shared drills and teamwork.

What emerged was not competition, but cooperation 🤝

Not “winning,” but understanding.

One coach described it powerfully:
“On the court there is no language… How powerful that little ball is.”

Years later, many of those same participants remain in contact. The exchange did more than build athletic skill. It built perspective, empathy and lasting connection.

🌍This belief in connection through sport is not new. PH International began by facilitating exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, when direct engagement was rare. From the start, the mission was simple: connect people across divides.

Sport, when designed intentionally, becomes more than a game.

It becomes common ground.

🌍 From Early Leadership to Global Opportunity

When Neli Nersisyan joined the Dare to Lead summer school in July 2023, she was only fourteen years old, the youngest participant in the program. Yet she quickly became one of its most active voices.

The Dare to Lead summer school was organized by the American Library and Training Center, established under the Tavush Outreach Program funded through a U.S. Department of State Public Diplomacy Section grant and implemented by PH International in Armenia. For Neli, it was her first formal experience learning about leadership, an experience that would shape the direction of the years that followed.

The knowledge and confidence she gained during the program became a starting point for deeper civic engagement. Since then, Neli has taken on several youth leadership roles, including:

🇪🇺 Member of the European Union Youth Council
🌱 Member of the UNICEF and Ministry of Environment Youth Council on Climate Issues
🏛 Secretary of the Youth Council adjunct to the Head of the Berd Community
👥 President of the Berd City Youth Group

She has also founded the Bridging Minds and Borders (BMB) Center, an initiative in her community that supports youth engagement and collaboration.

Looking back, Neli describes the Dare to Lead summer school as an important catalyst — one that helped turn an interest in leadership into concrete action and community involvement.

🎓 Today, her journey continues to grow. In September 2026, Neli will begin her studies at UWC Robert Bosch College in Freiburg, Germany.

We wish Neli every success as she begins this exciting new chapter.

🌍 40 Years. One Constant.

Over the past 40 years, the world has changed in countless ways. Borders have shifted. Technologies have advanced. Crises have emerged and reshaped how we connect with one another.

At PH International, our programs have evolved too. We’ve adapted to new contexts, partnered in new regions, and responded to challenges we could never have predicted. But through all of that change, one thing has remained constant: our belief in the power of human connection.🤝

From the earliest days of Project Harmony—when a group of teenagers traveled to build bridges through music 🎶—to today’s exchanges, civic education programs, and youth leadership initiatives, PH has been rooted in the same simple idea: that when people meet one another openly and with curiosity, understanding grows.

It happens in shared meals and late-night conversations.
In classrooms and community centers.
In moments of listening, learning, and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.

Forty years later, we still believe that real change doesn’t start with policies or programs.
It starts with people. With trust. With connection.

🌐That belief has carried us across generations and continents. And it continues to guide everything we do.
